The Assistant Director Health Information Management is responsible for technical and administrative management of the HIM Coding department, which includes all functions of inpatient and outpatient coding activities related to the management and training of coding, health record documentation analysis, CDI, scanning, and inpatient appeal management programs.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interact professionally, courteously, and appropriately with all stakeholders.
- Contribute to and participate in Performance / Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department, including data collection, analysis, compliance with risk management, and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams.
- Create work assignments, review tasks, instruct personnel, set performance standards, and evaluate performance. Orient, train, and counsel employees on all department and hospital policies.
- Update policies as needed for the department and Cancer Registry, and all Performance Improvement activities.
- Collect and process data for reports, surveys, and research projects; prepare reports and recommendations for review by Senior Director and upper management.
- Monitor the Cancer Registry program and provide coding and management support as needed.
- Conduct effective audits and monitor outpatient coding for quality, accuracy, and timeliness of work produced by each employee.
- Monitor and track denials and trends to identify opportunities for improvement in the coding process.
- Communicate with HIM Senior Director and / or Coding Managers to support revenue cycle activities and key performance indicators.
- Assist and coordinate work between the HIM department and CDI department.
- Prepare training materials and participate in orientation and instructional activities as needed.
- Interact with patients and medical staff, representing the department at meetings within and outside the Hospital Center.
- Provide weekly in-services to outpatient coding staff.
Qualifications
- Three (3) to five (5) years of progressive medical records management experience in a hospital-based HIM environment.
- Proficiency in office procedures.
- Registered Health Information Administration (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
- Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- Demonstrated technical, interpersonal, and management skills.
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CPT-4 Coding.
- Working knowledge of HIPAA Regulations.
- Computer literate.
