JOB SUMMARY

AtHouston Methodist the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) position isresponsible for functioning as novice to competent and demonstratesbasic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriatelyand carry out delegated nursing assistant level tasks for assignedagespecific diverse patient population assisting in the delivery ofpatient care and services under the supervision of a licensednurse.

This position conducts hourly rounding to ensure patientneeds are met and records data established by policy and procedureand reports observations and patient problems to the licensednurse.

The PCA position performs basic patient care activities ofdaily living (ADLs) within unitspecific defined limits and jobscope such as assistance with patient elimination hygiene comfortsafety nutrition and progress activity and practices Patient andFamily Centered Care in concert with Houston Methodist ICAREvalues.

Follows the patient andfamilycentered care standards and provides direct patient careunder the direction of a registered nurse.

Documents whereapplicable care administered diagnostic measurements treatments andprocedures in accordance with established policies and proceduresand cultural diversity and inclusion principles.

Responds to thecall light system contacting nursing personnel as appropriate andfollows through with meeting patient needs.(EF)

Assists with maintaining cleaning andstocking of equipment and supplies as established on assigned unit.May serve as an inhouse courier which may include retrieving bloodhand delivering labs tele boxes etc.

Organizes the workflowproblemsolves basic and routine matters and manages multipleongoing priorities seeking guidance and assistance from preceptorlicensed nurse or management. (EF)

Contributestowards improving department scores for patient satisfactionthrough peertopeer accountability i.e. bedside shifthandoff / report. (EF)

QUALITY / SAFETY35%

  • Reports observations conditionsand problems of patients to licensed personnel to achieve desiredpatient outcomes. Provides for the privacy of patients and familieskeeping the safety of the patient in mind.(EF)
  • Provides appropriate handoff at change ofshift at patient bedside to communicate and collaborate promotingpatientcentered care. (EF)
  • Conducts hourlyrounding to ensure patient needs are met (four Ps). Reports nearmisses and collaborates with the interprofessional health care teamto improve patient safety. (EF)
  • Contributestowards improving quality and safety scores through peertopeeraccountability. Supports initiatives to prevent conditions such aspressure injuries patient falls and hospitalacquired infections.(EF)

  • Assists with patient and staffingneeds (floats) across the service line or hospital as competenciesallow. Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently.(EF)
  • Utilizes resources with cost effectivenessand value creation in mind. Selfmotivated to independently managetime effectively and prioritize daily tasks minimizing incidentalovertime assisting coworkers as needed.(EF)

EDUCATIONREQUIREMENTS

o High School diploma or equivalenteducation (examples include : GED verification of homeschoolequivalency partial or full completion of postsecondary educationetc.)

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

oMust complete one of the following :

o PCAexternship

o PCA internalinternship

o Six months of direct patient careexperience

o Enrolled in a school of nursingprogram with a completed first clinicalrotation

CERTIFICATIONSLICENSES AND REGISTRATIONSREQUIRED

o American HeartAssociation Basic Life Support (BLS)

o ForSkilled Nursing Facility(SNF) / Rehab departments only CertifiedNursing Assistant (CNA)

KNOWLEDGESKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

oDemonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safelyperform the assigned job determined through ongoing skillscompetency assessments and performanceevaluations

o Sufficient proficiency in speakingreading and writing the English language necessary to perform theessential functions of this job especially with regard toactivities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity

o Ability to effectively communicatewith patients physicians family members and coworkers in a mannerconsistent with a customer service focus and application ofpositive language principles

o Performs basicpatient care activities of daily living (ADL’s) withinunit specific defined limits and job scope such as assistance withpatient elimination hygiene comfort safety nutrition and progressactivity
