At Houston Methodist the Lead RespiratoryCare Practitioner (RCP) position functions in a lead role for anassigned shift and / or area performing lead job duties which includeprojects or specialized responsibilities as a regular part of theirnormal job responsibilities.

In addition to the leadresponsibilities also performs duties and responsibilities at a SrRCP level which include advanced procedures.

This position servesas the liaison between management staff and physicians for routinematters as the primary point of contact for resolving questions andissues for RCPs as well as support staff resulting in the deliveryof exceptional patient care and adherence to standards of practicefor optimal patient safety quality outcomes and customer service.

Duties for the Lead RCP position may be varied and include many ofthe following : organizing work schedules assigning work reviewingtime cards for accuracy conducting quality assurance audits ofstaff performance developing and implementing quality improvementactivities training and mentoring staff providing feedback on staffperformance and developmental needs participating in thedevelopment of skills and performance of staffcollecting / analyzing / reporting on data preparing reports ondepartment performance and metrics and other responsibilities of asimilar nature and level.

PEOPLEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Rolemodels to team members effective communication skills assisting intheir development of such skills. Collaborates with management andall members of the interprofessional care team by activelycommunicating and reporting pertinent patient care information anddata in a comprehensivemanner.
  • Independently andexpertly serves as the department primary resource for staffensuring optimal department services and outcomes.

Facilitatesteamwork by coordinating department needs and responding positivelyto requests for assistance. Promotes a positive work environmentand leads the team to be dynamic and a focused work unit thatactively helps one other to achieve optimal departmentresults.

Orients guidesand mentors team members consisting of RCP and Sr RCPs students andsupport staff to help build confidence and competency in skillsknowledge and abilities.

Provides feedback to management on teammember performance and conduct. Develops skills of team members andcontinually assists with improving skills performance andoutcomes.

Leads andinitiates problem resolution within the work unit. Rolemodelsskills through peertopeer accountability to optimize improvement ofdepartment score for turnover / retention / employeeengagement.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Executesabove average clinical and critical thinking skills in challengingprocedures and patient care situations utilizing conflictmanagement techniques asappropriate.
  • Serves asliaison between team members management and physicians resolvingroutine matters for theshift / area.
  • Proactivelyidentifies needs for adjustment / intervention for optimum patientcare and experience. Monitors and adjusts activities of theassigned team to ensure optimum patient throughput and patientexperience.

Drives service improvements to impact department scorefor patient satisfaction through peertopeer accountability forservicestandards.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Conductsquality audits on equipment processes outcomes and team memberperformance. Documents develops and evaluates processes proceduresand outcomes.

Identifies opportunities for corrective action andprocess improvement providing recommendations and contributes tomeeting departmental and hospital targets for quality andsafety.

Provides directassistance to physicians performing tests as ordered assessing andassuring quality acceptability and reliability of results;

takescorrective action and involves others as needed toward achievementof this end.

Assists withdevelopment of policies procedures and protocols. Ensurescompliance with accreditation standards involved in obtaining andmaintainingaccreditation.

FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Providesaccurate and complete documentation of patient procedures. Enterscharges at the time service isdelivered.
  • Uses resourcesefficiently; does not waste supplies. Selfmotivated toindependently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasksand provides leadership to team members on effective and efficientutilization of time minimizing incidental overtime.

If assignedaccurately reviews team members time cards for managementapproval.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Initiates andleads department projects and shared governance activities.Participates in one or more department committees or subcommitteesand facilitates the accomplishment of the goals of thecommittee.
  • Seeksopportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies witha focus on continual development as a RCP and leadership skills.

Completes and updates the individual development plan (IDP) on anongoing basis.

Fosters apositive and constructive teaching environment by engaging studentsand coworkers in learning opportunities that are valuable and inalignment with businessobjectives.

EDUCATION

Graduateof education program approved by the credentialing body for therequired credential(s) indicated below in the CertificationsLicenses and Registrationssection.

WORKEXPERIENCE

Four yearsexperience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) with two yearsICU Neonatal and / or ER (preferred at HMCCH) and lead / supervisorexperience.

May consider HM employee with three years respiratorycare experience one year as a HM RCP and who demonstratesprogressive leadership abilities

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED

  • RRT RegisteredRespiratory Therapist (NBRC) AND
  • RCP Licensed RespiratoryCare Practitioner State Licensure by the Texas Medical Board AND
  • RRTACCS RegisteredRespiratory Therapist Adult Critical Care Specialty (NBRC) within 6months OR
  • NPSNeonatal / Pediatric Specialist (NBRC) within 6 months OR
  • CPFT Certified PulmonaryFunction Technologist (NBRC) within 6 months OR
  • RPFT Registered PulmonaryFunction Technologist (NBRC) within 6 months OR
  • RRTSDS RegisteredRespiratory Therapist Sleep Disorder Specialty (NBRC) within 6months OR
  • AEC CertifiedAsthma Educator within 6 months OR
  • TTS Tobacco TreatmentSpecialist (NAAP) within 6 months OR
  • RPSGT RegisteredPolysomnographer Technologist (BRPT) within 6 months AND
  • BLS Basic Life Support(AHA) AND
