We currently enroll over 7,000 students in which 68% identify as Latinx, 1% as Filipino, 8% as Asian, 3% as Black / African American, 18% as White, 1% as American Indian / Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial.

Madera Community College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community.

The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

The librarian will be responsible for providing instruction and technical library services to students and working with internal and external stakeholders, as well as introducing campus stakeholders to the range of Open Educational Resources (OER).

Other duties and responsibilities include :

  • Providing on demand reference and extended research services to students;
  • Conducting bibliographic instruction for students in a classroom environment;
  • Planning and presenting library workshops;
  • Collaborating with faculty to increase awareness of library resources to students;
  • Promoting library resources to faculty, students, and campus groups;
  • Collaborating with other librarians to establish library policies and procedures, and the development of budget proposals;
  • Collaborating with other librarians for purchasing and maintenance of the library collection(s);
  • Performing technical services duties;
  • Ensuring consistent access to electronic resources;
  • Planning and implementing the college's information competency goals;
  • Collaborating with other librarians to design and develop library research skills and library technology courses, workshops and online tutorials;
  • Evening reference desk, (night hours);
  • Performing website updates on a regular basis, including checking all links to the web page and updating as needed;
  • Creating library website content, online tutorials, and research guides;
  • Managing library databases and online databases, including maintaining bibliographic records of library database and online library collections;
  • Introduce campus stakeholders to the range of Open Education Resource(OER), zero cost, and low-cost course materials, specifically textbooks, videos, tests, and software;
  • Advocate for OER by engaging in events and conferences;
  • Assist discipline faculty adding OERs to their courses using the current Learning Management System (Canvas);
  • Provide training and advocate the benefits of open licensing;
  • Participating in the student recruiting activities;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Serving on and participating in department, division, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Working on assignments in a variety of settings and times, including evening and / or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of faculty as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications :

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices; AND

  • Master’s in library science, library and information science;
  • A valid California Community College Credential;
  • The equivalent education and / or experience (requires an equivalency)

Desirable Qualifications :

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience working with a diverse student population;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • At least one year of experience in an academic library setting;
  • Experience with reader’s advisory and reference services;
  • Knowledge of collection development and technical services functions;
  • Experience in library instruction; including strategies for promoting the success of academically at-risk and historically minoritized students;
  • Knowledge and experience in program assessment and planning;
  • Thorough knowledge of contemporary bibliographic-maintenance standards and practice, including cataloging rules, Library of Congress subject headings, OCLC / MARC records, Ex Libris Alma, and library automation.
  • Knowledge of library functions in the areas of acquisitions and perform ongoing maintenance and development for the integrated library automated system and library services platform.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing successful instructional strategies for non-traditional or academically at-risk students;
  • Demonstrated ability to assist interdisciplinary faculty in searching, validating, and adopting Open Education Resources (OER);
  • Experience with web page software and demonstrated knowledge of multimedia presentation software;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment :

177 duty days.

Salary and Benefits :

Starting salary is $57,750 - $86,942 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,160 is available.

Salary and stipends are prorated based on the number of duty days assigned.In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance.

Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure :

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement , a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable).

Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the recommended candidates . These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

About the College Center

The Madera Community College Center at Oakhurst (MCCO) is a center of Madera Community College. It is located just 20 minutes from the South entrance to Yosemite National Park and just minutes away from the Sierra National Forest.

The campus provides opportunity and access to higher education for a geographically isolated population in Eastern Madera County.

The campus currently serves Oakhurst, Mariposa County, Coarsegold, North Fork and the surrounding communities with over 75 courses in a variety of study areas.

The center is slated to open a new permanent campus in Fall 2021.
