The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director, International Program who will work with the Director of International Program, senior staff of the Museum and C-MAP (Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives) group leaders to plan for the Museum’s C-MAP research initiative and to oversee the daily work of the C-MAP fellows and the C-MAP Program Coordinator.
The role manages and supports the International Program’s Primary Documents publications series, the MoMA / CCL International Curatorial Institute and all other aspects of the department’s international initiatives, including the C-MAP post website.
Additional responsibilities include :
- Works with the Director of International Program, members of the Museum’s senior staff, and C-MAP group leaders, as required, to develop strategies for and to realize the C-MAP initiative, Primary Documents publication series, International Curatorial Institute and other international projects in alignment with Museum priorities.
- Works closely with Director of the International Program and C-MAP group leaders to manage an active program of international and local speakers and advisors, including working with group leaders, Fellows and C-MAP participants to conceive of a program strategy and to identify appropriate visiting speakers for internal and external seminars and events;
develops public identities for C-MAP and other Department initiatives, including creating public programs; supervises the Fellows and C-MAP Program Coordinator to ensure they coordinate and realize these activities, as assigned.
- Oversees the C-MAP website post, including maintaining a strategy to reflect C-MAP research and areas of focus; oversees the C-MAP Fellows’ editorial role in the website;
- communicates with the Advisory Board; manages the C-MAP Program Coordinator’s work concerning the maintenance of the site;
and supervises the C-MAP Program Coordinator and interns in the production of internal communications and external newsletters, advertisements, and social media announcements promoting the website’s content.
- Manages Primary Documents series and other International Program and C-MAP publications, including communication with external editors, advisors and MoMA’s Publications Department staff;
- oversees research, translation and preparation of manuscripts by contracted editors, translators and assistants; supervises Department Coordinator and Interns in conducting rights clearance and contracts for external translators and writers;
managing book launch events for Primary Documents volumes.
Manages, in coordination with Department Coordinator and Director, the MoMA / CCL International Curatorial Institute, including determining the participants;
communicates with funders; drafts the program’s schedule with the Center for Curatorial Leadership; and develops strategies to align the Institute with other Department and Museum priorities.
- Works with Director of International Program and members of the Museum’s senior staff, Development and Finance departments to develop financial strategies and oversee resources for the C-MAP initiative, International Curatorial Institute and other international projects.
- Represents the Department at local and international events and hosts international visitors to the Museum, as required.
- Works with Director of International Program and members of Museum’s senior staff to develop and execute international priorities as well as to maintain relationships with international institutions, scholars and funders.
- Communicates C-MAP and other International Program activities to Museum staff, board members, and funders.
- Works with Director of the International Program and Executive Director of the International Council to communicate with the Museum’s International Council regarding the goals and activities of the International Program.
- Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
Requirements :
- Masters of art degree in art history, and minimum five years relevant experience working in art museums and / or cultural organizations on programs and publications related to twentieth and twenty-first century global art.
- Familiarity with ideas that shape the ways museums are facing an increasingly global landscape.
- High degree of skill in diplomacy.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, computer, and research and writing skills.
- Experience managing staff (both full-time and project-based) and interns.
- Ability to create and realize program priorities, including managing multiple projects with competing timelines and budgets.
- Fluency in at least one language, in addition to English.
Supervises : Department Coordinator, in coordination with the Director of the International Program; and C-MAP Program Coordinator and C-MAP Fellows, in coordination with the Group Leaders
Reports to : Director, International Program
Salary range : Minimum of $92,000 to maximum of $130,000 per annum
