Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education.
Position Description :
The individual in this position will oversee the Dual Degree Engineering Program (DDEP) and hold a faculty position as an Instructor in Engineering, teaching one course each semester.
The individual will be responsible for the ongoing assessment and effectiveness of the program, manage activities related to corporate and institutional engagement, lead fundraising efforts, and serve as the secondary academic advisor for DDEP students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Program Development and Expansion : a. Develop strategies to demonstrate the program’s effectiveness and opportunities for growth through the collection and analysis of (e.
g., enrollment data, student experiences, impacts on retention).b. Identify synergies with the Atlanta University Center Consortium DDEP office, Clark Atlanta University, and Morehouse College that enhance programmatic and curricular offerings.
c. Ensure that the DDEP pre-engineering curriculum and advising structure meet accreditation standards, educational best practices, and engineering institution program requirements.
d. Implement program review recommendations.e. Lead the internal steering committee.f. Develop publications and reports that highlight the success of the program.
2. Student Advising and Success : a. Ensure student readiness for advanced study in engineering fields by assisting pre-engineering students in securing internships and scholarships beyond those offered by partners.
b. b. Provide individualized guidance to better prepare students for the transition to graduate programs, such as assisting students in attending national conferences, conducting workshops for DDEP students to facilitate their transition to engineering institutions, developing pre-engineering courses independently and in collaboration with NSM departments, and creating pre-first year experiences to ensure a successful transition into college.
c. c. Support NSM departments and other college units, including the Office of Student Success, the Office of Career Placement, and Career Pathways, in promoting academic success and potential for graduate study related to engineering.
d. Brief departments on what is necessary for students to successfully transition to engineering institutions and serve as the secondary advisor of DDEP students.
e. Maintain contact with DDEP students at engineering institutions to ensure students are progressing toward degree completion.
f. Collaborate with the Department Chair on the student’s primary major to certify DDEP students for graduation.
3. Partnership and Fundraising : a. Lead fundraising efforts for DDEP by collaborating with the Office of Research Innovation and Collaboration and the Office of Institutional Advancement.
b. Establish and maintain partnerships with engineering institutions, including drafting and revising memoranda of understanding and other agreements.
c. Coordinate with partnering institutions to ensure program elements meet the quality and expectations outlined in agreements.
d. Identify and prepare students for opportunities provided by partners, such as scholarships, internships, workshops, field experiences, course-based competitions, recruitment activities, and site visits.
e. Represent Spelman College on the AUC Dual Degree Engineering Advising Committee and external meetings related to engineering.
4. Administration : a. Manage DDEP budget.b. Supervise DDEP staff, including the program coordinator and graduate students.
c. Organize visits to and from graduate schools, corporate and government partners, and funders.d. Serve as Engineering Club Advisor (i.
e., NSBE and SWE).e. Organize annual engineering week.
Qualifications :
Education and Experience : A master’s degree, PhD preferred, in a science-related field and at least three years of experience within a higher education or corporate engineering environment.
Program management in a science-related field and previous supervisory experiences are a plus.Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills. Required.
The Director works closely with funding agencies (e.g., NSF, NASA) and external constituencies (e.g., Georgia Tech, Oak Ridge Institute, Boeing).
Thus, a seasoned professional demeanor is required to inspire confidence in the Spelman College science education programs and externship activities.
Excellent oral communication skills are required when presenting information and responding to questions from students, parents, employees, and the general public in one-on-one or group situations.
Incumbents must also be able to write business correspondence, employee evaluations, memos, letters, and e-mails.
The individual must have advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite, be able to process basic letters, memos, e-mails, and formal business correspondence, handle mail merges, flyers, spreadsheets with formulas and pivot tables, create forms, brochures, tables, and newsletters, and be able to use the Internet for searches.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsOSHA, HAZMAT, and First Aid training are pluses. Upon hiring, individuals must complete HAZMAT and First Aid training.
