Overview
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) Clinic, under the supervision of the Practice Supervisor or Manager, nurse, therapist, lead or Director, is responsible for assisting in patient care, documentation and supply management in the clinic or outpatient department.
S / he may collaborate with the Medical Assistant to support the provider(s) in providing patient care.
The PCT Clinic will also work to keep the unit supplied, clean, and organized. The PCT Clinic may function in an office assistant role within the clinic and / or department and answers the telephone, answers questions within their capabilities the patient or their support individuals may have.
S / he follows all policies and procedures of Northern Arizona Healthcare. They perform or assist with procedures that fall within the scope of practice of a PCT in addition to office assistant duties.
The PCT Clinic may be caring for infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics populations.
Responsibilities
Patient Care
Escorts patients from waiting area to exam room; communicates information regarding any extended wait or delay in appointment time.
Assists in transporting patients, equipment and supplies.
- Assists with transfer of patient with restrictions in weight bearing or impairment of motor status.
- Takes vital signs and basic historical patient data.
- Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, cast or splint applications, minor procedures, and a variety of other medically related tasks within the scope of knowledge.
- Instructs patients on urine collection procedures.
- Maintains department cleanliness including following procedures for clean up after treatments.
- Maintains equipment and supplies inventories.
- Follows guidelines for safety with regard to contact precautions and all policies / procedures dealing with blood borne pathogens.
- Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all NAH and departmental policies and procedures.
Practices in a safe and cost-effective manner.
- Assists patients with donning / doffing compression garments as needed.
- Assists with dressing removal as assigned by supervising clinician.
Entire Care / Wound Care Clinic / Departments
- Observes patient for skin integrity and reports and problem areas to supervising clinicians.
- Assists patients with activities of daily living such as toileting as needed.
- Assists patients with mobility under the direction of supervising clinician, including but not limited to therapeutic exercises.
Administrative
- Answers, evaluates and prioritizes incoming administrative line telephone calls, communicates effectively with callers obtaining complete and accurate information to determine the need(s) of the caller.
- Demonstrates accuracy of documentation of assessments, interventions and patient responses as evidenced by the appropriate documentation systems.
- Maintains department documents.
- Maintains charts and copies charts as requested.
Education
- Demonstrates understanding of the Department's Standards of Care and Practice and Administrative Policies as well as being able to locate Policy and Procedures manual in the assigned department.
- Demonstrates and utilizes the guidelines of care and practice via the nursing process and in accordance with Arizona State Board of Nursing Laws and Regulations being able to perform at a fully competent level.
- Focuses on personal development areas, engaging in professional / collegial interactions with peers and students.
Compliance / Safety
Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas / RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs;
performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
- Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations / statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.
- If required for position, ensures all certifications and / or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
- Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.
Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or GED- Required
Graduate of a Nursing Assistant Program- Required
Certification & Licensures
Current, unrestricted CNA or LNA license in the State of Arizona- Required
BLS (American Heart Association)- Required
Level 1 Finger Print Clearance- Required
Fingerprint Clearance :
If employee does not have an Arizona LNA license :
- Fingerprint Clearance Card application number- Required upon hire
- Fingerprint Clearance Card- Required within 90 days from date of hire
Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.
Experience
Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department.
Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
