Senior Architect

General Statement

Under general supervision, performs difficult architectural work in connection with layouts, plans and details.

• Prepares and supervises the preparation of architectural plans and specifications.
• Initiates and responds to correspondence from contractors as well as other sections during design and construction phases of projects.
• Oversees and prepares cost estimates and design calculations for architectural components of projects.
• Checks architectural plans and details prepared by others.
• Prepares design parameters for architectural components of projects; coordinates the parameters with other sections.
• Assigns, supervises and reviews work of subordinate personnel; rewards, disciplines, directs or adjusts grievances of other employees or effectively recommends their hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion or discharge.
• Communicates with staff members from other departments and sections, contractors, and vendors.

Other Job Functions

• Makes field investigations and reports on conditions of site, buildings and furnishings.
• Contacts municipal, state and federal agencies to prepare and request permits for authority to perform work within their jurisdiction;

coordinates assigned projects.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of architecture.
• Thorough knowledge of state and local construction practices, rules and regulations.
• Thorough knowledge of construction materials, the various trades and their jurisdictional boundaries.
• Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in architecture.
• Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
• Ability to review architectural drawings with accompanying explanatory comments.
• Ability to prepare architectural drawings and make feasibility studies for building and renovation projects.
• Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Absolute Requirements

Registration as an Architect by the State of Illinois.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited five year college or university majoring in architecture or architectural engineering and four years’ experience in architecture, one year of which must have been at the full professional level.

Substitution

Graduate study in architecture or architectural engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Professional or sub-professional architecture or architectural engineering experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

• One year of service with the District as an Associate Architect.
• Civil service status as an Associate Architect.
