The Axel Group is seeking a Principal Planner to join our client’s team out of Central New Jersey. This employee-owned company is a well-known multidisciplined engineering firm, providing consulting, engineering, environmental and technical services across a wide variety of industries.
This Principal Planner will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of communities by addressing challenges related to growth, economic development, sustainability, and housing diversity.
The ideal candidate will be driven by a passion for inclusive and equitable planning practices, with extensive experience in municipal planning, project management, and staff leadership.
This role requires exceptional communication skills, a strong background in master planning, affordable housing, and client relations.
The Principal Planner must be comfortable traveling to planning board meetings (4 to 5 times per month), however, the role can sit out of office locations in either Essex, Ocean or Monmouth County.
This position is also hybrid, with 1 to 2 days of in office work required.
Responsibilities :
- Prepare and oversee the development of master plans, ensuring they align with community goals and regulatory requirements
- Develop and implement affordable housing plans, including Housing Elements and Fair Share Plans, to address community needs and compliance
- Review and assess development applications for land use boards, providing expert recommendations and ensuring alignment with zoning and planning regulations
- Serve as the primary contact for clients, understanding their needs, and delivering tailored solutions
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through effective communication and project management
- Oversee projects from inception to completion, including submission to clients, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery
- Prepare and testify in support of expert witness reports, Redevelopment Studies, and Redevelopment Plans
- Ensure compliance with land use and zoning ordinances
- Lead, mentor, and manage junior staff members, fostering professional development and ensuring project success
- Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, including the preparation of reports, presentations, and documentation
Requirements :
- 10+ years of experience in municipal planning, land use planning, and / or project management. This includes the preparation of master plans, affordable housing plans, land use boards, redevelopment studies and plans, and zoning ordinances
- Bachelor’s Degree AND / OR Master’s degree in Planning or comparable degree, required
- New Jersey Professional Planner (PP) license and AICP Certification, required
- Strong writing and oral communication skills
- Public speaking experience
- Ability to work independently and manage projects effectively
- Demonstrated ability to interact with clients, understand their needs, and develop practical solutions
