General Statement

Performs supervisory and professional electrical engineering work. Prepares studies, designs, economic analyses and other reports;

performs resident engineer duties; and supervises the maintenance and operations of electrically operated equipment, electric distribution equipment and systems, and computer control and data acquisition systems.

Assigns, supervises and reviews work; instructs, trains and assists subordinate electrical engineers and others; maintains work schedules;

takes necessary action or makes recommendations regarding work performance.

  • Prepares electrical specifications; plans, designs and prepares layouts and diagrams for electrical engineering and related aspects of capital improvement projects.
  • Prepares cost analyses for design, repair and construction; participates in budget preparation.
  • Acts as resident engineer in charge of construction projects; reviews submittals; oversees electrical testing; supervises field inspection and control of electrical installations, removal, alterations and additions and ensures compliance to plans and specifications.
  • Inspects electrical equipment operation at District facilities; plans, schedules and supervises the work of electrical engineers and others engaged in the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of electrical equipment;

analyzes electrical systems and equipment problems and initiates solutions.

Coordinates engineering projects; provides technical advice to other engineers, designers and contractors regarding construction, operation, and design requirements;

coordinates with outside agencies on matters of common interest.

  • Plans and maintains an inventory of needed parts for facilities, equipment and projects.
  • Maintains an awareness of engineering technologies and determines suitability for improvement of District facilities.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports and related documents.
  • Utilizes computer programs and data processing.

Other Job Functions

  • Reviews the reports of subordinate engineers and technicians; approves or prepares progress estimates and prepares progress reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of electrical engineering and the ability to use that knowledge to prepare designs, specifications, plans, and reports.
  • Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in electrical engineering.
  • Considerable knowledge of electrical codes and regulations governing the installation of electrical materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) operations, techniques, and practices in the preparation of engineering plans and designs.
  • Knowledge of computer control of industrial processes.
  • Ability to use personal computers in applications including spreadsheets, databases and word processing.
  • Ability to develop original electrical engineering designs necessary to solve non-routine problems. Ability to use principles of engineering economics.
  • Ability to plan, supervise, criticize and evaluate the work of others.

Absolute Requirements

Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in electrical engineering and four years of full-time, post-degree electrical engineering experience related to the District's activities.

Substitution

Full-time graduate study in electrical engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.

Promotional Requirement

  • One year of service with the District as an Associate Electrical Engineer; or possession of a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and one year of such service as an Associate Civil Engineer, Associate Mechanical Engineer or Associate Structural Engineer, Associate Process Control Engineer or Treatment Plant Operator III.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
