The Graduate School of Education (GSE) is seeking a full-time Director of Advancement Services to lead our donor relations and stewardship efforts and provide strategic oversight of data analysis, events, and development communications.

As the leader of the Advancement Services Team, you will play an important role in motivating and developing staff to achieve their professional aspirations and reach their full potential.

The GSE’s External Relations team promotes the people, places, and pursuits of the Graduate School of Education by illuminating the achievements and goals of the school;

engaging supporters in philanthropic opportunities; and facilitating participation by alums, donors, and friends in the life of the GSE.

The Director of Development is a member of External Relations’ senior leadership team and is vital in connecting the Graduate School of Education with Stanford University and beyond.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate Dean for External Relations, the Director of Advancement Services will set program goals for advancement services that align with GSE and University campaign priorities, enhance donor loyalty programs, and support the GSE’s educational and research initiatives.

The Director’s portfolio includes oversight of coordinated stewardship, development communications, data management and analysis, marketing and event planning, and management of a team of professionals specializing in each area.

In this role, you will :

Lead and direct the Advancement Services team to ensure cohesive execution of strategies that enhance GSE donor stewardship and engagement.

Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.

  • Provide strategy, leadership and direction for the GSE’s donor relations programs.
  • Oversee the development, review and enhancement of GSE donor relations policies that promote transparency, donor trust and confidence.
  • Participate in senior-level strategy meetings within the GSE, and with OOD donor relations colleagues, offering expertise in donor relations to shape strategic decisions and priorities.
  • Facilitate collaborative efforts within GSE or across Stanford schools and units on initiatives that build, sustain, and advance donor relations and stewardship programs.
  • Plan, design, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive program of stewardship and donor relations programs for the GSE’s donors.
  • Ensure that donor gifts are used in an appropriate and timely fashion, working with university and school leadership, faculty, financial teams, and attorneys, keeping in mind the legal and public relations implications.
  • Partner with development officers and development leadership to develop and oversee giving opportunities for the GSE and ensure that these are adhered to by the development team.
  • Create and participate in new and innovative ways to build meaningful relationships with donors.
  • Serve as a high-level advisor to fundraisers at every level to support, enhance and coordinate stewardship efforts.
  • May convene and chair committees and working groups drawn from the development community.

Additional responsibilities include :

  • Serve as the project lead on top-donor events, endowment reporting, and fellowship matching.
  • Maintain high standards of performance and accountability, continuously supporting and evaluating the advancement team’s efforts to achieve the GSE’s mission.

To be successful in this position, you will bring :

  • Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience, preferably in an educational institution or nonprofit, or a combination of relevant experience and education.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience working with donors or the philanthropic process.
  • Strong client service orientation and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and professionalism to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization.
  • Proven ability to collaborate, build team spirit, and achieve results within a diverse population.
  • Ability to work across groups, schools, and the university to achieve aims of the program.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience leading project teams.
  • Proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities, with competing deadlines. This may include long-range strategic planning, major event oversight, endowment reporting, gift reviews and day-to-day operations.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment in situations requiring independent decision-making and in handling confidential and sensitive material.
  • Experience fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Prior management experience of at least three years.

  • Ability to lead and motivate others and earn the respect of associates at all levels.
  • Creative problem-solving with strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to achieve results working through others facilitating and enabling others to act will be as important as actions taken directly.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals, including strong team management skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and function effectively in an environment demanding a high energy level, discretion, flexibility, and superior work.
  • Experience working in an academic environment and engaging senior academic leaders at volunteer meetings and events is desirable.

Physical Requirements :

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, stand / walk, sit, use a telephone.
  • Occasionally light / fine grasping, lift / carry / push / pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Non-commercial Class Driver’s license.

The expected pay range for this position is $153,000 to $163,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
