Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The full salary range for this position is $20.93- $34.72. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $20.93- $22.53.

Job Closing Date

Initial applicant review will begin on or around July 10th, 2024. Posting will remain open until filled.

Applicants must have graduated with a bachelor's degree in 2023 or 2024 to be considered for this position.

This position is fully in-person.

This position is a 2-year contract and is eligible for full UC benefits.

About the Job

The Student Affairs Trainee at the University of California, Merced Grow Our Own Program will play a vital role in providing programmatic support to various units within Student Affairs, and providing direct service to students in their non-academic life at the University.

Responsibilities include gathering and evaluating data for strategic planning and providing essential information to students navigating campus policies and procedures.

Under the guidance of higher-level professionals, the Student Affairs Trainee will also contribute to content creation for marketing plans and assist in monitoring social media platforms.

This position offers a unique opportunity to support recent graduates in their transition to professional roles within the university, contributing to workforce development and the cultivation of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct Student Services

  • Provides information about the student affairs unit and helps students and community partners with wayfinding. Provides information about services, programs, and resources offered by the Student Affairs division and other campus units.
  • May provide guidance and advice to student life departments and leadership regarding organizational support, budgeting, and / or campus policies and procedures.
  • Provides basic information to help students navigate campus / department policies, guidelines, and systems.

Program Support

  • Conducts research on best practices to recommend programmatic or service-level improvements.
  • Working with campus stakeholders (students, staff, faculty, instructors) to maintain partnerships and / or projects. Project management will include knowledge and consideration of campus / community agreements, partner identified need(s) and potential for building capacity, as well as student applicability, safety, learning outcomes, and assessment of project outcomes for all stakeholders.

Event Planning and Coordination

  • Assist in planning, implementing, and assessing departmental events, including large-scale or annual events.
  • Assist with coordinating, facilitating, and supporting the logistics for events, programs and / or services.
  • Gathers, codes, reports, and evaluates data collected from various events, services, and surveys for strategic planning purposes.

Communication & Outreach

  • Assist with communications (e.g., printed, presentations) and marketing materials for events, programs and services.
  • Assist in developing innovative ways to communicate with students, faculty, and staff regarding events.

Other Student Affairs Support

  • Fosters partnerships with community / off-campus partners to achieve student success goals.
  • Creates and distributes educational and program resources supporting student academic, personal, and career goals.
  • Provides regular reports to supervisor and actively participate in campus-wide committees aligned with department goals.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related area. (Required)
  • Work experience which has led to the development of the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position is required. (Required)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Basic knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population. (Preferred)
  • Familiarity with student affairs and university systems (Preferred)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and under close supervision.
  • Experience in event planning, marketing, and communication is preferred. (Preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.
