The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans.

SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration.

The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco : health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response.

Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.

Job Description

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital’s (ZSFG) Department of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is a vital cornerstone of the hospital’s operations, providing essential services seven days a week.

With a commitment to excellence, the FNS Department prepares and delivers thousands of patient meals daily. Dedicated to upholding the highest standards, the FNS team ensures the provision of quality, cost-effective food and nutritional services to ZSFG’s patients, staff, and visitors.

This commitment extends to compliance with regulatory standards set forth by the Joint Commission, the State of California’s Title XXII, the California Retail Food Code, and others.

The Director of Food and Nutrition Services (0931 Manager III) performs the following essential job functions :

  • Oversees and directs the ZSFG FNS Department, providing supervision to a team of managers responsible for food service and dietary operations.
  • Executes the strategic plan by implementing short- and long-term goals that align with the scope of service, mission, and values of ZSFG.
  • Develops and manages a $20 million budget, controlling costs related to labor, inventory, equipment, materials, and other expenses.
  • Reviews and participates in contractual agreements related to the services provided to the FNS Department.
  • Communicates regularly with the San Francisco Department of Public Health and ZSFG executive staff regarding departmental activities.
  • Collaborates with hospital leadership to plan, develop, and monitor policies, objectives, and procedures in response to regulatory, policy, and operational changes.

The Director of Food and Nutrition Services (0931 Manager III) may perform other duties as assigned / required.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education : Possession of bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; AND
  • Experience : Five (5) years of professional experience in an institutional food service delivery or dietary operations organization.

Qualifying experience must include three (3) years of experience supervising professionals.

EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION : Additional qualifying experience as described above may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.

One year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter units.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

Desirable Qualifications : The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring :

  • Certified Dietary Manager, Certified Food Protection Professional (CDM, CFPP) with the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals
  • Current valid registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)
  • Experience working in a healthcare or hospital setting

Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) Examination (Weight : 100%)

  • Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) examination that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to : knowledge of and ability to apply federal, state, and local regulations that govern and ensure food safety, nutrition, and quality;
  • knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques as applied to operations related to production, purchasing, and café retail;

ability to effectively administer a budget, including developing, monitoring, and managing financial plans to ensure efficient allocation and utilization of resources.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Supplemental Questionnaire exam in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
