Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the TMC Operations Branch Chief, a Senior Transportation Engineer (Supervisor) in the Office of District Traffic Manager (DTM), the Transportation Engineer (Electrical) is responsible for the maintenance, support, development and in resolving problems related to hardware and software systems for the District's Transportation Management Center (TMC).

Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Electrical in-person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Electrical online exam prior to passing the written hurdle.

Candidates who take the TE Electrical online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility.

Working Conditions

Position is located in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County.

Employee works in a climate-controlled office under artificial light, and may be required to travel to work sites related to the job where the employee may be exposed to inclement weather, noise, dust, etc.

Employee may be required to travel in state, but the travel is not very frequent.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy.

Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises.

The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.

All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New toState candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification orminimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

Appointment to Range D requires avalid Professional Engineering License (Electrical) issued by the CaliforniaBoard of Registration for Professional Engineers.

For all other ranges, a PE license is notrequired.

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

Statementof Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit a Statement ofQualifications will disqualify candidates from the hiring process.

SOQ should be 2 pages maximum with 12-point font size double spaced.

1. Describe your knowledge of functions and activities required for in the maintenance, development and documentation of software applications most especially as it relates to Transportation Management System (TMS).

2. Describe your knowledge of or experience in Database Management including maintenance and development of Application Interfaces.

3. Describe your knowledge of or experience in various operating systems including but not limited to Windows, Linux, Ubuntu, UNIX and your ability to use Oracle, MySQL and writing of Visual Basic scripts with MS Office application Suite.

4. Demonstrate your experience in preparing technical reports, presentations, and correspondences with the ability to compose clearly written documents and to present information, findings, and conclusions in a concise and logical manner.
