Teacher of the Visually Impaired
Position : 10 month, Full time
Reports to : Coordinator of Specialized Programs, EC Director
Qualifications
North Carolina licensure or certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)
Special Education background is preferred
Experience working with visually impaired students, preferably in an educational setting
Strong knowledge of adaptive techniques, assistive technology, and instructional strategies for students with visual impairments
Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with students, parents, educators, and colleagues
Responsibilities
Provide Visual Impairment (VI) Services as described by DPI Guidelines for Exceptional Children
Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand the visual needs and learning preferences of the student including generating professional evaluation reports
Develop and implement individualized educational plans that address the unique needs and goals of the student
Articulate the needs and interventions of students in IEP meetings both verbally and in IEP database systems
Provide direct instruction and support to the visually impaired student, utilizing appropriate adaptive techniques and tools
Collaborate with classroom teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure the student's needs are met effectively
Provide guidance and support to other school staff to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment with access to instruction
Adapt and modify educational materials to accommodate the student's visual impairment
Work in collaboration with other staff members to ensure the student’s success
Understanding of Regular Curriculum and Extended Content Curriculum, Grades K-12
Document services provided including attending, direction instruction content, and student response to instruction
Provide progress reports as required by the IEP
Document services provided including attending, direction instruction content, and student response to instruction
Maintain VI equipment, provide inventory updates, and ensure that broken devices are repaired
Ability to travel between school locations
Physical requirement : Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc.
Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Due to amount of time spent standing and / or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work
