Job Summary

Utilizing the nursing process, responsibility for providing for immediate and long-term nursing care needs of patients within the standards of the department, hospital and regulatory agencies.

Essential Functions

Accurately assesses patients’ needs.

Utilizes multiple data sources to determine actual / potential health problems and functional status.

Utilizes Recovery Oriented Framework to identify patient strengths.

Performs point of care testing.

Communicates findings effectively to members of the healthcare team.

Documentation reflects response to intervention, demonstrates an understanding of patients’ response to treatment interventions.

Identifies patient behaviors that contribute to the development of a crisis; utilizes non-verbal and verbal techniques to de-escalate crisis situation.

Accurately plans nursing interventions for assigned patients.

Modifies and individualizes Nursing Plan of Care and protocols.

Participates in the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan.

Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care needs.

Partners with patients / families to support recovery goals.

Provides and implements nursing care interventions.

Establishes a therapeutic alliance with assigned patients.

Demonstrates safe, accurate and timely medication administration using BMV scanning.

Reviews physician orders in a timely manner.

Promotes interventions that provide the least-restrictive alternatives and recovery oriented goals.

Participates in leading patient groups.

Accurately evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care interventions.

Documentation on the Nursing Plan of Care, protocols, and Assessment Flowsheet reflects response to intervention, demonstrates an understanding of patients’ response to treatment interventions.

Accurately communicates patients’ clinical status at clinical team rounds and change of shift reports.

Utilizes evidence based nursing knowledge to guide practice decisions.

Provides a leadership role in organizing and providing patient care.

Provides direction and supervision of MHSs.

Delegate care interventions.

Assumes a leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies.

Promotes / provides for critical incident de-briefing following emergency event.

Qualifications

Education

Other Certificate / Diploma Nursing Required Or Bachelor's Degree Nursing Preferred

Licenses and Credentials

Registered Nurse [RN - State License] - Generic - HR Only required

Experience

Current Massachusetts RN license in good standing.

BLS and ACLS certification required (or obtained within 6 months of hire).

Minimum 2 years of OR nursing experience, including both scrub and circulate roles—ophthalmology experience strongly preferred.

Strong understanding of sterile technique, AORN guidelines, and surgical safety practices.

Ability to work independently and adapt quickly in a dynamic environment.

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Key Responsibilities

Function as both scrub and circulating nurse for ophthalmic surgical procedures including cataract, retina, glaucoma, corneal, oculoplastic, and other microsurgical cases.

Prepare the operating room with necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies.

Ensure adherence to sterile technique and proper infection control protocols.

Monitor and support patients throughout the intraoperative phase.

Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical techs, and fellow nurses to ensure smooth surgical workflow.

Document all intraoperative care and nursing interventions accurately.

Participate in room turnover and preparation between cases.

Adhere to all hospital policies, regulatory standards, and safety guidelines.

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Per Diem Operating Room RN to join our ophthalmic surgical team. This dual-role position requires proficiency in both scrub and circulating responsibilities, supporting a high-volume, fast-paced ophthalmology OR with a focus on exceptional patient care and surgical outcomes.
