This is a hybrid role with a weekly onsite requirement at Assembly, Row (Somerville) with possible local travel to MGB sites as needed.

General Summary / Overview :

The Learning Technologist (Instructional Designer) / Training Manager, Employee and Labor Relations reports to the SVP of Employee Relations / Labor Relations and Labor Strategy and will develop in-house and support external development of employee relations and labor relations live and e-learning training modules that are engaging, effective, and interactive.

Mass General Brigham is focused on providing training on critical employee and labor relations topics in a self-sustaining fashion utilizing technical and writing skills that enable us to design, develop and update training on e-learning platforms with agility, provide mechanisms for more effective live trainings and materials, and work with outside vendors as necessary on training development.

The ideal candidate will have experience and / or familiarity with employment law, employee relations, labor relations and / or human resources content or experience working in this space.

This role requires leveraging talent, expertise, technology and collaboration with key stakeholders and team members to ensure successful development and implementation of training.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities :

Under the direction of the SVP of ERLR, the Instructional Designer (ID) / Training Manager will support the development and growth of learning at MGB in the employee and labor relations space.

The ID / Training Manager will apply principals and practice of instructional design and adult learning theory to design alternative teaching strategies and content delivery methods.

The ID / Training Manager will assist in the creation of educational materials and resources for both traditional classroom-based and virtual synchronous workshops as well as online, self-directed, asynchronous learning.

The ID will also support development of other online channels for educational purposes. Additionally, the ID / Training Manager will adhere to academic / industry standards that conform to accreditation of professional practice organizations.

This position will work closely with MGB’s ERLR COE team members and the organizational development and learning team as appropriate to ensure the provision of impactful learning to MGB’s 85,000 employees.

The ID / Training Manager is responsible for leading multiple projects concurrently leveraging internal / external resources to meet tight deadlines.

The ID / Training Manager will work directly with the ERLR COE team to provide consultation and support services in instruction design including, but not limited to instructional strategies, assessment, appropriate use of technology, and distributed learning.

Examples of consultation and support services would include :

  • Guide faculty and facilitators in evaluating current teaching methods and tools to encourage improvements in teaching effectiveness, delivery technologies, and instructional materials.
  • Provide up to date knowledge of the rapidly developing market including innovative technologies and learning techniques.
  • Develop new courses or revise existing courses to maximize student learning outcomes.
  • Design instructional components for both physical and virtual classroom environments.
  • Build meaningful engagement and interactivity in a variety of learning environments.
  • Suggest techniques for creating collaborative, active and simulation-based learning activities.
  • Develop text and web-based support materials to assist faculty in improving their teaching skills.
  • Research and evaluate new evidence-based teaching and learning methodologies and technologies and keeps current with instructional design best practices.
  • Provide expertise in the RFP process when external vendors are in scope for a project.

Qualifications

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent), preferably in the field of Instructional Design or a related field within education.
  • 7+ years’ experience with instructional design for adult learners, preferably in healthcare or higher education.
  • Preferred experience working in Human resources, Employee Relations, Labor Relations, Legal Department, or similar type roles.
  • Experience with online learning environments, supporting face to face, online, blended, and self-directed modalities. MGB currently utilizes HealthStream for its LMS, but experience should not be limited to this platform.
  • Competence in hardware / software selection, multimedia production, web authoring / design.
  • Competence with various social media tool for educational purposes.
  • Familiarity with Content Management, Learning Management systems and familiarity with SCORM and other applicable standards.

  • Strong project management skills. Ability to manage complex projects with multiple parallel activities.

  • Display interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence with the ability to work with staff at all levels. Knowledgeable in learning theory, specifically adult learning theory and neuroscience.

  • Able to communicate and present concepts and issues to all at an appropriate and effective level.
