About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

Residence Directors have direct responsibility for the effective administration and community development of one or more buildings housing 250-700 students.

The Residence Director's primary purpose is to develop and maintain an environment conducive to social and intellectual growth as well as the academic success of resident students.

This position's responsibilities include but are not limited to creating and implementing co-curricular engagement within university housing, student staff supervision and development, housing and occupancy administration, student conduct, as well as collaborating with campus partners on overall facility and security management within the assigned residential area.

Individuals in this position are responsible for implementing protocols to address emergencies / crises / mental health issues including eating disorders, self-harm incidents, alcohol and drug use / abuse / overdose, and Title IX prohibited offenses.

Supervise a staff of 8-16 paraprofessionals.

Due to the live-in requirements of the Residence Director position, it is required that the on-campus apartment provided must be the individual's primary residence and that person must maintain a high visibility within their residential areas of responsibility.

Offices are also located in the residence area. All RDs participate in an on-call duty rotation and require the individual to work untraditional hours, including evening hours and weekends.

The Residence Director is a 12-month, full-time position. Summer responsibilities include working on special projects, with conferences, orientation, and summer students.

The Residence Director can serve in this role for five years.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Experience in conflict resolution and mediation.
  • Prior experience supervising staff.
  • Prior experience with student development theory in a live-in professional or graduate assistant residence hall setting preferred.
  • Ability to work autonomously and with the ability to exercise time management and decision-making skills. Individuals must be well organized with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with computer applications is required.
  • Skills and knowledge are normally acquired through a Bachelor's Degree; Master's Degree preferred in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration, or related field.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

Staff Supervision : Supervise the job performance of 8-16 Resident Assistants and one Senior Resident Assistant. Provide training and supervision.

Address job performance issues through progressive discipline and termination, if necessary, in consultation with supervisor.

Complete ongoing evaluation and semi-annual performance appraisals. Provide direction and support to staff through goal development, assignments and follow up.

Community Development : Develop and implement educational engagements that address students' personal and intellectual growth.

Serve as a resource for the Senior Resident Assistant and Resident Assistant staff in the development and implementation of educational engagements.

Serve as the primary advisor to residence hall council.

Crisis Management : Respond to emergency and crisis situations during business hours or when on call. If outside of those parameters, contact the appropriate duty staff to assist.

Evaluate and assess student behaviors and community trends and provide appropriate interventions. Behaviors include, but are not limited to eating disorders, self-harm incidents, roommate conflicts, damage and vandalism, mental health issues, Title IX prohibited offenses and alcohol and drug use / abuse / overdose.

Student Conduct : Provide direction and support to Resident Assistant staff in the enforcement of Northeastern University Code of Student Conduct and Guide to Residence Hall Living.

Hold administrative hearings with students regarding alleged policy violations, adjudicate cases, assign sanctions and make referrals when necessary.

Utilize educational sanctions as a developmental component as appropriate. Contact parents when appropriate in resolution of student conduct concerns.
