Industry Mentors for Democratic Startups

civ.works is a privacy protected social platform built for meaningful civic action. The concept is to empower citizens and build a platform to stand up against entrenched systems, helping to empower citizens again. Volunteers will help collectively build something powerful and important, contributing to a platform that supports governance and ownership with every team member globally.

Small-d democracy in corporations, schools and other institutions is a promising approach to cement democratic values. We are looking for experts in industry — nearly any industry — to mentor democratically run startups and help them share governance and ownership with every team member globally. The primary startup we work with focuses on general technical work involving credentials, agentic AI, and development work, and could operate across multiple verticals.

This is an opportunity for someone more advanced in career, possibly retired, who deeply understands a specific process or operation ripe for automation, to engage with energetic and hopeful teams globally. The work can be deeply meaningful and may result in published patterns and papers that others can use.

Work is presented at conferences such as Badge Summit, Ownership Economy, DWeb meetups, and more.

Location note : Rancho Cordova, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor democratically run startups by sharing governance and ownership strategies with each team member globally.
  • Advise on processes ripe for automation and scalable operation.
  • Contribute to general technical work related to credentials, agentic AI, and development across potential verticals.
  • Share insights at conferences and help publish patterns and papers to benefit the broader community.

Qualifications

  • Senior-level career experience; may be retired; deep understanding of a particular process or operation.
  • Ability to influence and guide teams across diverse industries and geographies.
