The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Manhattan College seeks outstanding applicants for a visiting faculty appointment at the Visiting Professor level, with a start date in August 2024.

This search is open to candidates specializing in School Counseling with the knowledge and skills needed to direct the school counseling program at Manhattan College.

Special consideration will be given to those with expertise in the areas of 1) working with diverse populations 2) social justice, equity and antiracism, and 3) using digital technologies to enhance teaching and learning, including teaching online.

This position includes Program Director responsibilities, including but not limited to the following :

  • Promoting and modeling the development of NYS School Counselors, in accordance with the NYSED regulations for School Counseling
  • Prepare and submit reports for program MPCAC accreditation
  • Manage all aspects of program administration
  • Support students through the new NYSED examination for School Counselors
  • Create and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with partner schools
  • Teach graduate counseling coursework across the graduate counseling programs
  • Support the recruitment and retention of students
  • Fosters diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging as well as collaboration with colleagues and students

The successful candidates in School Counseling will hold a Ph.D. in Counselor Education or a closely related field. All candidates will demonstrate excellence in academic research, and a proven commitment to teaching and advising students.

Preference will be given to candidates with a strong knowledge of New York City schools.

We seek a faculty member with a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring, who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity, in order to attract and retain a diverse, talented student body.

The next academic year is an excellent time to join the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, which boasts three graduate counseling programs.

All three programs (school counseling, mental health, and marriage and family) are 60-credit programs. We also offer students advanced certificates in bilingual and mental health counseling.

Most recently we developed a series of 5-year BA / MA programs in Psychology and School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy.

With an increased focus from New York State on social and emotional learning and mental health programming for students, agencies, and families;

the roles of these professionals have never been more important. Manhattan College is well positioned to meet this call in developing mental health professionals.

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences has a strong and intimate relationship with the surrounding communities in the Bronx and Westchester, presenting opportunities for collaborations around teaching, research, and service endeavors.

Our school counseling degree leads to New York State teaching certification eligibility. Course schedules are built for working professionals, and are offered via a blended model (a mix of online synchronous and in-person classes), which enhances their understanding and application of content.

Multiple opportunities are provided for student’s clinical experiences, fieldwork and internships with our New York City and Westchester partner schools.
