SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
The Electrical Engineer II will support the engineering design process for all active construction projects and maintenance projects at our operational facilities when needed.
The professional hired for this position will have a background in substation design and willingness to grow their expertise into solar, wind, and energy storage designs.
Primary responsibilities include reviewing electrical design and study submittals for the Project Engineering Team and validating comments made by the Owner’s Engineer.
Additional responsibilities include assisting the Operations team with troubleshooting events and supporting plant upgrades / changes at a technical level.
The Electrical Engineer II will ensure that all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformity with the National Grid Renewables’ established policies and objectives while incorporating all functions related to safety, testing, repair, and maintenance of all equipment used within the owned assets.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
- Support engineering for new projects end-to-end.
- Assist in electrical design reviews for all projects.
- Communicate regularly with all personnel to ensure satisfaction of internal / external customer requirements.
- Participate in business unit improvement initiatives.
- Support project coordination efforts to include working with the contractor and helping to coordinate interfacing points for all parties involved.
- Assist in early design reviews to ensure National Grid Renewables requirements and preferences are being followed.
- Contribute to development and maintenance of design standards and criteria for project infrastructure.
- Oversee quality aspects of engineering and construction, to include ensuring compliance with design standards, coordination between parties, and accuracy of final documentation.
- Review project electrical designs and studies to include : substation, solar, wind, and / or energy storage.
- Provide technical support to plant operations as may be required for project infrastructure, facilities, and systems.
- Participate in Operations rotating on-call Engineering support to immediately address critical plant events or failures ensuring minimal down time.
- Keep updated on new industry technologies, standards, and requirements by governing agencies.
- Devise new approaches to technical problems using a broad knowledge of precedents in the industry.
- Support other departments as a technical resource when needed.
- Work closely with internal departments to continue building out standardized processes and procedures.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THIS ROLE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 3-5 years’ experience in high voltage design to include some of the following areas :
- Substation Physical design.
- Substation Protection & Control design.
- Protection coordination and relay programming.
- Substation standard studies and calculations.
- SCADA integration.
- Self-starter with ability to manage own schedule.
- Experience developing technical documentation such as drawings, reports, & technical analysis.
- Ability to understand technical documentation related to renewable energy projects such as interconnection agreements, facilities studies, permitting documents, local codes and regulations, civil and electrical construction specifications.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical design and construction problems that require advanced engineering knowledge.
- Proficiency using personal computer tools such as MS Office, Word, Excel, NetSuite, MS Project, Visio, AutoCad and other database management systems.
- Experience working with large, regulated utilities and their substation standards.
- Ability to remotely troubleshoot substation trip events, plant controller issues, and equipment malfunctions with onsite staff.
- Willingness to expand technical knowledge to renewable energy designs.
- Adaptable and can switch or change tasks quickly while working on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred.
- Familiarity with different ISO, RTO, and Transmission Owner technical requirements for interconnection of generation facilities preferred.
- NERC Compliance experience preferred.
- Familiarity with renewable energy projects and collector substations preferred.
