Detailed Position Information

The Department of Educational Studies at the University of Alabama invites applications for an Professor of Qualitative Research that can be filled at the levels of Associate or Full Professor.

A successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in educational research or in a related field with a specialization in qualitative methods, teaching experience at the undergraduate and / or graduate level(s), and demonstrated evidence to conduct high-quality research leading to publication.

The Department of Educational Studies houses a flourishing educational research program that offers a PhD in Educational Research and both Qualitative and Quantitative Research Certificates for graduate students.

A successful candidate will join three existing active and engaged qualitative research faculty as well as a vibrant qualitative research community, which includes faculty and doctoral students from across the university.

The work norms for the position are structured to fit what is required of our research faculty. The successful candidate will be expected to teach 2 classes in qualitative research each semester (40% teaching allocation), 40% of their time will be dedicated to research, with the remaining 20% of their work time devoted to service to the Department, College, and University.

Responsibilities

  • Establish an active research program leading to publication;
  • Seek significant external funding;
  • Teach qualitative research courses;
  • Participate in program, departmental, and college initiatives / service;
  • Provide academic advisement and mentoring to graduate students; and
  • Serve on dissertation committees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in educational research or in a related field with a specialization in qualitative methods (i.e., applicants must have 18 hours of graduate-level qualitative coursework);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of qualitative research methods and methodologies;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the epistemological and ontological foundations of qualitative research and inquiry
  • Evidence of ability to conduct research leading to publication and a strong record of high-quality scholarly publications;
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness;
  • Evidence of success in working with students and faculty in a variety of disciplines;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
