Certified Nurse Assistant II - Med/Surg (On-Call, Per Diem, Variable)

Job Summary :

Works as a member of the nursing team under the supervision of the Registered Nurse on assignments that are routine in nature and within authorized duties of the CNA 2 Acute Care.

Tasks performed have predetermined procedures and guidance and supervision is provided as needed. Position supports RN in patient care delivery as dictated by comfort and safety and in accordance with identified training and certification.

Essential Responsibilities :

  • Problem Solving : Work tasks are fully defined. Refers more difficult issues to RN.
  • Decision-Making : Uses judgment to perform tasks. Accepts accountability for own actions.
  • Compliance Accountability : Consistently supports compliance and the Principles of Responsibility (Kaiser Permanentes Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance, and adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements (if applicable), and Kaiser Permanentes policies and procedures.
  • Communication Skills : Demonstrates effective written / verbal communication. Documents and relays messages or instructions accurately.

Reports patient information on a timely basis. Verifies understanding of information and asks for clarification when necessary.

Documents accurately to reflect understanding of assigned tasks. Confronts difficult or conflict situations constructively.

Service Orientation : Demonstrates a commitment to service. Contributes to a positive patient care experience. Anticipates the customers desires and takes proactive steps to meet those needs.

Recognizes the diversity and cultural norms of the individual. Seeks assistance when needed in culturally sensitive situations.

Assessment or Observation Skills : Obtains vital signs and collects data; reports values outside given parameters. Reports observations.

Reports outcomes of assigned nursing care tasks.

Critical Thinking Skills (including strategic and systems thinking). Demonstrates the ability to problem solve. Identifies resources and uses them when confronted with a problem.

Prioritizes assigned tasks and work or seeks assistance appropriately. Demonstrates understanding of how Kaiser Permanente key systems affect services and quality of care.

Technology Skills : Demonstrates technological literacy in using computerized information systems related to assignments.

Demonstrates technical knowledge of clinical procedures and use of special equipment as assigned.

Knowledge : Attends mandatory inservices related to patient care and others as appropriate. Displays clinical knowledge appropriate to education / training and assigned tasks.

Assists in identifying own learning needs. Seeks assistance when doing an unfamiliar task / activity, or when unable to perform an assigned task / activity.

Takes responsibility to keep informed of organizational policies and current information in policy and procedure manuals and unit communications.

Legal & Ethical Responsibilities : Provides care and assists patients within the limits of the authorized duties for CNA 2 Acute Care consistent with those defined by the state.

Demonstrates knowledge of the legal responsibilities, limitations and implications of their actions. Provides care in compliance with government, state or regulatory agencies (e.

g. Medicare). Adheres to and supports KP policies and Principles of Responsibility. Adheres to HIPAA and confidentiality policies.

Demonstrate accepted ethical practices with respect to cultural, social and ethnic differences, within the healthcare environment (e.g. CLAS standards).

Team Focus (Teamwork) : Interacts effectively and sensitively with all members of the healthcare team. Demonstrates flexibility as a team member.

Collaborates with team members and supports the goals of the team. Supports a collaborative LMP environment. Assists others with patient care activities when own assignment is completed.

Maintains an acceptable attendance record. Participates in unit-based activities, including staff meetings.

Leadership & Change Management : Identifies and supports new ideas. Demonstrates the ability to support change efforts within the team or unit.

Assists in orienting and mentoring new team members. Acts as a resource to other team members.

Performs Tasks & Procedures (Implementation) : Performs assigned tasks competently and demonstrates operational knowledge of procedures, therapies, special tests and equipment within scope of knowledge and training.

Vital Signs. Temperature. Pulse. Respiration. B / P - manual and electronic. Pain Level. Pulse oximetry. Warm and cold therapies.

Warm and cold compresses. Ice bags, ice gloves, or dry cold pack. Heated soaks and whirlpool or sitz baths. Data gathering.

Newborn hearing screening (Maternal / Child). Replacing electrodes and leads on monitored unit. Bladder scanning. Capillary blood glucose (CBG) testing.

Placing electrodes and leads and / or running 12-lead electrocardiogram or three lead rhythm strips. Testing of gastric contents and stool for occult blood and pH.

Applying topical over-the-counter creams and ointment(s) for prophylactic treatment for skin conditions. Applying pediculicides.

Applying sequential compression devices. Assisting patients in and out of Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) machines. Assist patient to cough and dry breathe.

Suctioning oral pharynx. Turning oxygen on and off at pre-established flow rate. Using incentive spirometry. Clean ostomy site and change dressing or appliances for established, non-acute ostomies on intact skin.

Collect clean catch urine specimens. Discontinue Foley catheter at direction of RN. Measure, record, and / or empty output from drainage devices and closed drainage systems.

Demonstrates department, job and age-specific competencies.

Safety Practices : Promotes a safe patient environment by proactively reporting errors, near misses or systemic hazards and participating in their resolution.

Promotes patient safety through diligent adherence to policies and procedures. Maintains a safe, ergonomically correct, and hazard-free environment for patient, visitors, staff and self.

Prevents injury or illness through proactive, safe work practices and follows health and safety policies and procedures.

Regularly observes fire and life safety policies and procedures. Completes environmental and health safety training per policies.

Demonstrates the use of defined emergency response procedures.
