JOB SUMMARY

Simmons University seeks an Assistant Director for its Multicultural Center (MCC), who will work under the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion to develop and implement programs that enhance inclusivity and visibility on campus.

This role involves managing daily operations, leading key programs, and supervising student staff to foster a supportive multicultural environment.

Additionally, the Assistant Director will engage in cross-departmental initiatives, represent the department in university committees, and contribute innovative ideas aligned with the University's core values.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Programming (40%)

  • Manage administrative coordination and execution of MCC annual / traditional / collaborative programs and events, including but not limited to orientation events, cultural affinity and identity-based occurrences / celebrations, Multicultural End of the Year Celebration.
  • Plan and organize community forums that explore topics of interest and / or concerns, including identity, culture, community, wellness, campus climate, and feedback.
  • Assist the MCC Director in the development and facilitation of student-centered dialogues, trainings, and workshops that introduce and expand on the common set of competencies for diversity, equity, and inclusion work;

trainings include orientations, leadership development workshops, etc.; coordinate LGBTQ+ workshops, trainings, and other effective ally training.

  • Manage the Bridge Program, ALANA Student & ALANA Mentor Program (ASAM) including marketing, info sessions, recruitment;
  • check-ins and end of the year social; Collaborate with Simmons Alumnae / i to grow and sustain the ASAM Program; Support alumnae / i events and initiatives focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, that directly relate to enhancing the student experience;

and the COF on the fall BIPOC Conference.

Outreach / Advising / Consultation (20%)

  • Orchestrate the advising of the Cultural Affinity and Identity-Based student organizations, collaborate in their logistical event planning and purchasing.
  • Nurture relationships with internal and external partners to create opportunities for collaboration centered around diversity, equity, and inclusion, belonging and wellness efforts.
  • Serve on recruiting and interviewing committees as well as various university committees on behalf of MCC.

Leadership / Management (25%)

  • Provide supervision and direct oversight for the Multicultural Center Graduate Interns and Student Coordinators, hire, train, evaluate and provide feedback regarding professional development and job performance.
  • Participate in professional training opportunities on and off campus.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assessment & Evaluation (15%)

  • Assist in gathering data and seeking input from BIPOC students to enhance the impact of Center resources and services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 2-4 years of professional experience working with diverse or marginalized populations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to working with underrepresented populations of students, including an understanding in the way systems of bias operate and their impact on student experiences as well as the dynamics of privilege and oppression.
  • Experience advocating for and supporting the academic, personal, and professional needs of underrepresented populations.
  • Willing and able to host regular after-hours programming and work occasional weekends.
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4-6 years of professional experience working with diverse or marginalized populations.
  • Master's degree preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Full-time (40-hours / week) position with a schedule of Monday through Friday.
  • Eligible for a flexible, hybrid in-office / remote work setting structure.
  • Frequent sitting for long periods; occasional kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, walking, and standing; occasional reaching above and below desk level.
  • Frequent lifting / carrying of papers, files, equipment, and material weighing up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent fine manipulation sufficient to operate a computer keyboard; frequent grasping to handle individual papers, write and take notes, and feel individual objects.
  • Working on a computer, typing and looking at a screen for the majority of the day.
  • Required to work some evenings and weekends.
