We're looking for a skilled
Utility / Applicant Designer
to join a leading utility design team supporting PG&E electric distribution projects. In this key role, you will produce detailed designs and documentation to facilitate new or upgraded electric service connections, ensuring compliance with utility standards and project requirements.
You will combine technical drafting, engineering calculations, and coordination efforts, working closely with engineers, project managers, contractors, and regulatory agencies. This position offers a balance of office-based work with some field verification activities.
Key Responsibilities
Develop precise construction drawings and supporting documents following PG&E electric design standards using AutoCAD and Civil3D.
Generate project material lists, instructions, and estimates with Excel and specialized estimating software.
Perform calculations including voltage drop, flicker analysis, pole loading, and conductor pulling tensions to verify design accuracy.
Prepare field packages and assist with field verification for overhead distribution line work using measurement tools.
Use sound engineering judgment to troubleshoot design challenges, conduct research, and seek guidance when needed.
Coordinate with government agencies, utility partners, contractors, and customers to secure necessary permits and approvals.
Assess constructability and cost-effectiveness of designs by collaborating with stakeholders to deliver practical solutions.
Manage multiple assignments to meet quality standards, deadlines, and project budgets.
Support customer communication and provide timely responses to inquiries related to project design and execution.
Qualifications
PG&E Qualified Applicant Designer for Electric OR 3+ years of relevant applicant design experience, with commitment to obtaining PG&E qualification within 6 months.
Experience with PG&E gas design is a plus.
Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills.
Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and drafting / design software including AutoCAD and Civil3D.
Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
Comfortable preparing technical documentation and occasionally presenting to internal or external stakeholders.
