Duties
As a member of the Academic Advising Center & New Student Orientation, the Academic Advisor :
- Provides educational information about college academic programs and services for prospective and currently enrolled students;
- Orients new students toward an informed and successful start to their college experience;
- Assists students in assessing their interest and abilities by examining their educational goals, making decisions and developing short and long-term educational plans to meet their planned objectives;
- Interprets and reviews college placement examinations, Advanced Placement (AP), ACT / SAT scores, IB and CLEP (College Level Examination Placement) to ensure proper course selection;
- Provides accurate and timely information related to Career Programs and Transfer courses; Demonstrates knowledge about educational, institutional, corporate and community resources, as well as other college-wide programs and services.
- Presents on Academic Advising services to groups of students, parents, and / or college staff.
- Provides programming and interventions in which Academic Advisors directly support students.
Education / Experience Bachelor’s degree and related experience, training, and knowledge in individual and group advising process related to college students academic and personal development.
- Preference for candidates with demonstrated experience and / or knowledge of community college students. Qualifications This position requires a strong commitment to student centered learning that focuses on the development and success of the learner;
- candidates should possess knowledge of academic advising theories and practices that support teaching, learning, and human development;
- prior experience working with a variety of students that includes various levels of academic preparedness, multicultural and linguistic diversity, and economic status;
