About the Department / College

The Department of Occupational Therapy is located on NAU's Phoenix Bioscience Core campus, where students have access to cutting edge technology, facilities, and labs.

The department offers the Doctor of Occupational Therapy degree in a Traditional or Hybrid path, preparing students to work with clients across all stages of life in a wide range of settings.

This accredited degree is the only public and non-profit graduate program in the Southwest United States.

The 30-acre Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC) is in the heart of Downtown Phoenix where NAU, UA, and ASU are co-located. The PBC offers more than six million square feet of research, academic, and clinical facilities for students earning advanced degrees in medical professions with access to cutting edge technology.

The urban environment presents numerous opportunities for interprofessional education with other NAU programs on campus including the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, the Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies program, and Master of Athletic Training program.

NAU's program is known for its emphasis on service learning and community interaction. The program connects with community agencies to give the students experience with people in their natural context.

Students see people in their lifelong journey adapting to disability, chronic illness or social conditions so that they can choose strategies that will be meaningful in the long term examples of this emphasis is serving as one of the primary members of the award-winning and nationally-recognized Community Health Mentor Program (CHMP), where students from various programs learn from their community mentor and from each other.

About the Position

Northern Arizona University's entry level Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program invites applications for a full-time,12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment at the downtown Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include teaching courses related to area expertise and / or one or more of the following topics : mental health, research, administration, leadership, and health policy.

In addition, academic faculty will conduct original research, apply for external grant funding, and disseminate scholarly products.

Other expectations include student advisement, applied scholarly activities and service to the department, college, university, and profession.

Responsibilities Include :

Varying based on department need and annual performance goals for each faculty member. Workload typically reflects 60% teaching, 30% scholarly activities and 10% service.

This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned PhD or research doctorate in occupational therapy, rehabilitation sciences or a related healthcare field from an accredited institution (ABD may be considered, but the doctorate must be completed by the start date).
  • Experience working with students in a classroom and / or mentoring students in research.
  • One year or more of experience in an academic setting.
  • Record of publications and / or grant writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of mentoring and / or collaborating with novice researchers.
  • Additional certification(s) that indicates area of expertise.
  • Extensive record of publications.
  • Record of successful grant-funded projects or demonstrated potential.
  • Record of successful university level teaching experience or demonstrated potential.
  • Record of professional leadership to the profession.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range begins at $70,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

  • This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance;
  • participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year;

Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the . Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan).

Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment.

If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment.

New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.

The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
