IU has long been an international leader in research on cognition across humans, animals, and artificial systems, and in the study of intelligence as it manifests in embodied cognition.

The Department of English has long nurtured strengths in poetics, narratology, stylistics, creative writing, and rhetoric, the application of cognitive methodologies to the analysis of cultural artifacts, and the study of literature in relation to epistemic transformations in the understanding of human consciousness.
