Job summary

CSIS seeks a full-time intern to support the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy and the Defense & Security Department. This program focuses on issues related to Indo-Pacific security, U.

S.-China military competition, and U.S. defense planning. This intern will conduct research to support a CSIS wargame on a future war over Taiwan and assist with the physical production of the wargame.

The intern will also provide administrative support for public and private events hosted by the Defense & Security Department on the changing character of war.

Interns should be highly motivated, a focused problem-solver, and able to navigate in a fast-paced working environment. This position will be considered on a rolling basis through December 6, 2024.

The hired candidate will be paid hourly, commensurate with experience ($17.50 / hour for current undergraduate hires, $18.

50 / hour for hires with a bachelor’s degree, and $19.50 / hour for hires with a master’s degree)

Essential duties and responsibilities

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following

  • Supporting high-level meetings and public events including prepping materials, set-up, event registration, and more;
  • Contributing to design and facilitation of wargames on U.S.-China war over Taiwan;
  • Spot and background research on the Ukraine War, Israel-Hamas War, and Chinese nuclear development;
  • Independent long-term research projects;
  • Administrative support to program; and
  • Other administrative tasks as necessary.

Knowledge, education, and experience

  • Strong academic record with a demonstrated interest in security and war studies. Competitive applicants should be in their junior year of undergraduate study or above.
  • Must have at least a 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution
  • Experience attending meetings and taking notes for principals
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to work independently

Physical requirements and work conditions

This position will be based out of our Washington DC headquarters and is expected to be in-office. The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee working in an office environment.
