Junior / Assistant / Associate / Full Level Specialist - Oskowitz Laboratory

The Oskowitz lab at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking independent and creative researchers to join a fast-moving project developing a therapeutic for the treatment of aortic aneurysms.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Heart Association (AHA), the Oskowitz lab is focused on translational research for cardiovascular disease.

The Oskowitz laboratory occupies approximately 1,000 sq. ft. on the 2nd floor of the Smith Cardiovascular Research Building (SCVRB) on the Mission Bay UCSF campus.

The five story, SCVRB was opened in 2010 as the primary home of the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute investigators and is a state-of-the-art biomedical research facility.

The top floor of SCVRB is a fully equipped vivarium including procedure and surgical suites. The lab has exclusive access to a small animal microsurgery suite on the 5th floor of the SCVRB.

In collaboration with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Adam Oskowitz and other senior scientists in the lab, the Specialist will focus on research investigating a treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

This will include basic molecular biology, cell culture, small animal surgery and in vivo work, large animal surgery and tissue acquisition.

The Specialist will be integrated into a team of researchers focused on bringing a novel biotechnology from discovery to a first-in-human clinical trial and as such the work will have critical timelines and milestones.

Initially, the Specialist will work under direct supervision. After a period of onboarding, the Specialist may be given the opportunity for more independent research efforts depending on the level of competence and comfort.

The Specialist will be expected to work onsite in the Oskowitz lab 5 days a week (Monday-Friday).

Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must have a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, pharmacology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field or at least 4 years of experience with Molecular biology including RNA and protein-based assays animal models and in vivo work including tissue harvest, specimen collection, histology, and blood processing.

Specialist appointed at the Assistant rank must have a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, pharmacology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of years of experience with Molecular biology including RNA and protein-based assays animal models and in vivo work including tissue harvest, specimen collection, histology, and blood processing.

Specialist appointed at the Associate rank must have a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, pharmacology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field or at least 5 to 10 years of experience with Molecular biology including RNA and protein-based assays animal models and in vivo work including tissue harvest, specimen collection, histology, and blood processing.

Specialist appointed at the Full rank must have a PhD (or equivalent degree) in biology, pharmacology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field or at least 10 or more years of experience with Molecular biology including RNA and protein-based assays animal models and in vivo work including tissue harvest, specimen collection, histology, and blood processing.

Applicants who have significant experience with multi-channel flow cytometry or FACS, experience preforming small animal surgery or tissue harvest, experience with advanced microscopy and image analysis or experience with in vivo imaging or localization studies are strongly encouraged to apply.
