Job Title
This position involves performing routine general labor and custodial duties to maintain clean, safe, and attractive facilities for City residents.
Responsibilities include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning restrooms, and emptying garbage in assigned City facilities and grounds. The role also includes minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and air filters. The employee exercises independent judgment and action, particularly when operating motor vehicles to travel between facilities and complete assigned tasks.
Examples of duties include :
- Facility Security & Access : Opens and secures facility doors, sets or resets security alarms, and locks buildings after business hours to ensure safety.
- Cleaning & Floor Care : Responsible for dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, waxing, and buffing floors, both indoor and outdoor, across City facilities to maintain cleanliness.
- Waste Management & Restroom Care : Empties garbage cans, cleans windows, doors, glass fixtures, and restrooms (toilets, sinks, floors, walls), restocks supplies such as toilet tissue, hand towels, and air fresheners to maintain hygiene standards.
- Maintenance Reporting : Documents and reports safety issues or other facility maintenance needs to a supervisor for timely attention.
- Power Equipment & Tool Usage : Uses and maintains assigned power equipment and hand tools (e.g., buffers, auto scrubbers, high-pressure washers) for cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, and furniture.
- Event Setup & Support : Assembles and disassembles tables, chairs, and other event equipment; provides staff support during special events by collecting garbage, delivering food to concession stands, and assisting with various tasks.
- Routine Maintenance Tasks : Performs routine maintenance tasks, such as changing filters, replacing bulbs, and managing other building operating systems to ensure functionality.
- Additional Duties : Performs other related duties as required to support facility operations and event coordination.
Qualifications include :
Building Cleaning Knowledge : Practical understanding of cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment, with a focus on their economical and efficient use.Facility Awareness : Familiarity with building locations and the purpose of each facility.Minor Repair Skills : Capable of performing minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs to maintain facility functionality.Floor Care Equipment Proficiency : Skilled in operating specialized equipment such as high-speed buffers, stripping machines, and floor wax applicators.Manual Labor & Cleaning Expertise : Competent in performing manual labor tasks like mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, and other cleaning tasks to ensure cleanliness and upkeep of buildings.Instruction & Reporting : Ability to follow supervisor instructions accurately and report any maintenance needs or concerns in a timely manner.Interpersonal Skills : Strong ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, other department staff, and the general public.Minimum qualifications include :
High School or GED equivalency and some work experience in building custodial and / or preventative maintenance work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Valid North Carolina Driver's LicensePhysical requirements and working conditions include :
