POSITION DUTIES
The main purpose of this position is to providedirect, comprehensive health care to children in schools and other communitysettings.
These health services include, but are not limited to : well childannual exams, school entry physicals, sports physicals, immunizations,diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions, anticipatory guidanceand health education, referrals to other health professionals, medicalproviders, and resources, case management and coordination of health care.
Thisposition is considered essential for emergencies.
EssentialPersonnel : This position may be declared essential on a case- by-casebasisbytheHealthOfficerordesigneeforemergencyresponseto a specific mass casualty, pandemic, disaster event, or other designated public health emergency.
90% ClinicalPractice :
- Establishesmedicaldiagnosis,prescribesmedications,and develops treatment plans based on evidence-based guidelines for common short-term or chronic stable health problems for a pediatric and adolescent population
- Prescribesmedications,ordersandplanstreatmentsaccordingto current guidelines from nationally-recognized professional organizations(CDC, AAP, etc.)
- Assessesandmanagesminorsomaticandbehavioralhealthproblems
- Orders, performs, and interprets laboratory testsanddevelops appropriate treatment plans
- Providesguidanceandinstructioninhealthmaintenanceand disease prevention in conjunction with other health professionals, including patients’ other medical providers
- Appropriatelyreferspatientstootherhealth careproviders
- Encourages and assists patients and their families to understandhealthconditionsandassistthemindevelopingand performing self-care measures to improve health and promote optimum wellness
- Mayprovide advice, trainingandguidance tohealth suiteandschool personnel
5% QualityImprovementandStaffDevelopment :
- Providesdataandotherinformationrequiredforreportsandquality improvement projects according to schedule and as requested
- Identifiestrainingneedsandassistswiththeeducationandtrainingof program and health department staff
- Providesconsultationtoschools’staff,includinghealthsuitepersonnel, as requested

Respondstoweatheressentialassignmentandpublichealthemergencies as assigned or at the discretion of the Health Officer
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education : Determinedby the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses under the certificationrequirements for Nurse Practitioner or Nurse-Midwife.
Experience : One year of experience as a NursePractitioner or as a Nurse-Midwife.
Note : Candidatesmay substitute Armed Forces military service experience as a commissionedofficer in Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Midwife classification or NursePractitioner or Nurse-Midwife specialty codes in the Nursing field of workon a year-for-year basis for the required experience
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- At least one year of experience as a pediatric or family nurse practitioner
- Experience working with children and adolescents
- The ability to collaborate with community partners
- Spanish speaking
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current certificate as a Nurse Practitioner or as a Nurse Midwife from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
