The Women, Infant, and Children’s (WIC) Breastfeeding Peer Counselor position works to meet the mission of the Sedgwick County Health Department by providing one-on-one personalized assistance for pregnant, post-partum, and breastfeeding clients and coordination of lactation services within the WIC program.
This position is responsible for education, making second contact through phone calls, mailings, texts and teaching classes.
This position is also responsible for some after hour breastfeeding assistance by phone calls or texts. This position requires a thorough knowledge of WIC program policies and procedures.
Employee will provide support during public health emergencies (Activation Level 1).
Customer Service and Outreach Support
Identify and clarify client needs, research issues, and communicate program information to clients Refer and document community referrals Schedule, reschedule, cancel and mail reminders for client appointments Manage email inboxes and faxes;
monitor and respond to requests Follow policies, procedures, and workflows Gather clients medical data (length / weight) as needed Promote breastfeeding, including providing education to address mother’s needs and document outcomes
- Handle issuance and return of breast pumps
- Manage supply inventories of office, print materials and medical supplies including breast pump supplies.
- Provide WIC outreach : mailings and in-person events
- Teaches WIC breastfeeding class via in-person or ZOOM. Distribute and collect surveys from breastfeeding classes
- Meet program productivity standards
- Follows HIPAA regulations and WIC confidentiality
- Report and provide written documentation to supervisor on client complaints
- Refer clients to a Designated Breastfeeding Expert when situation occurs outside their scope of practice
- Attend annual mandatory breastfeeding training and others assigned.
Breastfeeding Support for Clinic and WIC Staff
- Promotes and plans breastfeeding promotion in the WIC clinics
- Assists in keeping the clinic staff current on lactation
Documentation and Recordkeeping
- Document client findings within 8 business hours of completion of appointment
- Generate monthly reports to initiate client contacts and class management
- Complete personal WIC daily hours report and personal e-timesheet accurately and on-time.
- Schedule, reschedule, and answers client questions over the phone
Minimum Qualifications : High School Diploma or equivalent. Has breastfed one child for a duration of 6 months or more (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
