Job Summary
A General Mechanic will be responsible to perform various tasks in several areas using a wide variety of tools and equipment.
Examples of basic tasks include, but are not limited to the following : changing HVAC filters, cabinet repair, changing light bulbs, installing shelving and other light carpentry duties, cleaning clogged drains, faucet repairs, toilet repairs, bed repairs, wheelchair repairs, RTU repairs.

Essential Job Functions :
Plans work according to job requirements.
- Makes use of shop drawings, diagrams, equipment specifications or special instructions to plan work according to job requirements.
- Estimates time and material required, and obtains necessary supplies and equipment.
- Uses a variety of hand and power shop tools and equipment, including various gages and measuring devices.
Performs maintenance and service.
- Following preventative maintenance program or special assignment performs designated maintenance and service on a wide variety of systems, equipment, instruments, etc.
- Makes preventative maintenance rounds in all areas, and takes steps to maintain and / or restore mechanical, electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling and other systems and equipment.
Calls supervisor and / or other mechanics when major systems and equipment break down or other problems requiring additional help occur.
Performs a variety of maintenance, repair and servicing tasks in all trade areas, where qualified; including plumbing, electrical repairs and adjustments, replacing damaged or worn parts, repairing equipment, adjusting thermostatic controls, changing filters and making minor repairs to window air conditioning units;
making mechanical repairs and adjustments to tables and chairs, stretchers, wheelchairs and various other items, etc.
- Cleans, services and changes filters in rooftop units to assure proper air filtration.
- Performs light carpentry duties including patching and repairing walls and painting
- Strips and waxes floors. .
- Responds within reasonable time to all maintenance requests logged in books on each floor.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Educational / Minimum Requirements : High School Diploma. Five years of mechanical experience preferred, construction, grounds maintenance and facilities experience in a hospital setting preferred.
State / Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirement s : None
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements :
General orientation at time of hire. Fire / Safety / Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by the Hospital.
Special Requirements : Familiarity with general property and vehicle maintenance, grounds maintenance equipment, mechanical ability, valid Connecticut Class I Driver's License.
Physical Requirements : On feet all day, substantial moderate to heavy lifting in excess of 50 lbs. Works in awkward positions which require bending, climbing ladders, shoveling, standing, and sitting for prolonged periods of time in a vehicle.
Work Environment : Exposure to outdoor elements including severe winter conditions, indoor construction, demolition conditions.
Cognitive Requirements : Mechanical aptitude, good verbal skills, ability to follow instructions and comprehend.
