JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Executive Director, California Black Freedom Fund, the Director, Programs will lead the development, implementation and assessment of CBFF’s grantmaking strategy, leadership development, capacity building and organizational resilience initiatives, and convenings.

The Director will develop, maintain and refine the full life grants cycle of processes and systems for CBFF’s funding strategy.

The Director will steward CBFF’s partnership with the California Legislative Black Caucus, as well as other public-private partnerships and initiatives.

The California Black Freedom Fund is preparing to spin away from Silicon Valley Community Foundation and establishing itself as an independent 501(c)(3) organization by January 2025.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development and Grantmaking

  • Oversee the development and implementation of grantmaking in alignment with CBFF’s vision and values, strategic plan and commitment to participatory and responsive grantmaking.
  • Guide the development of overarching programmatic strategies, implementation and evaluation metrics.
  • Lead the development, organization and promotion of convenings and other events that catalyze and amplify the work of CBFF grantee partners and strategic initiatives.

Strategic Partnerships and Development

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, serves as a key leader in CBFF’s policy and budget advocacy and other activities to increase state investment in philanthropy serving California’s Black communities.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Strategic Development, assist in the development of donor learning agendas and fundraising plans aligned with CBFF’s impact goal.

Program Evaluation and Reporting

  • Ensure an integrated cycle of planning, evaluation, learning and iteration across programmatic initiatives and projects.
  • Monitor and assess program progress and effectiveness against strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with staff and consultants to refine and strengthen data collection, synthesis and analysis.
  • Ensure the production of materials and reports that demonstrate the impact of CBFF’s grantmaking and strategic initiatives.

Management

  • Manage consultants to advance CBFF program priorities.
  • Ensures program preparation for Board of Director meetings including grant proposals, program reports and other materials, including supporting the preparation, operation, and reports from subcommittees where appropriate.
  • Build relationships and collaborate with peer groups across the philanthropic, non-profit and government spaces on initiatives that have cross-departmental impact.
  • Work with CBFF leadership to develop a staffing plan for CBFF’s programmatic work.

Other Duties

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and the Director, Strategic Fundraising, participate in CBFF’s resource development and capacity building agenda.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Minimum seven years’ experience in fields relevant to assigned responsibilities. Preference for significant relevant work experience (10+ years) with strong networks and contacts, as well as a broad, generalist background with deep and comprehensive understanding of program design and development, systems, networking, community change and community coalitions.
  • Deep commitment to the California Black Freedom Fund’s mission, values, and theory of change.
  • Experience in contributing to the growth of an organization by supporting new partnerships.
  • Experience in grantmaking or a related field with demonstrated expertise in CBFF’s issue areas.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining funder relationships.
  • Excellent analytic, writing, and strategic planning skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple, sometimes overlapping deadlines;

establish and negotiate timelines; and ensure timely delivery of high-quality work.

  • Creativity, flexibility, sound judgment and ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Flexibility, sense of humor, emotional intelligence, capacity for self-reflection and humility.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with high-performing peers on shared efforts. The ability to listen and learn from diverse perspectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to process complex information and present ideas in a pragmatic, compelling manner.
  • Strong software skills in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

SVCF is committed to offering competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits. The target hiring range for this position is $150,000 to $170,000 per year based on experience, credentials and internal salary equity.
