Job Summary : Participate in coordinating admissions to the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit.

Job Description :

Essential Responsibilities :

Gather pertinent information relative to prospective admission's appropriateness. Investigate party / self-payee reimbursement information and ensure that there is approval from the payer.

Ensure that patient meets clinical criteria for admission and that patient has a legal status at time of admission.

Verify insurance eligibility and benefits; obtain appropriate payer authorizations for psychiatric care and enter authorization into appropriate medical center information systems.

Confirm free care status, where applicable.

Offer financial counseling to determine appropriateness for referral for financial assistance; complete free care applications, when appropriate.

Ensure regular verification of Mass Health eligibility.

Provide 24 hour responsibility to Inpatient Psychiatric Services. Offer above listed fiscal responsibilities on-call coverage for urgent questions / issues related to patient placement / admission.

Participate as member of the Quality Assurance / Utilization review committee. Attend all JCAHO, DPH and DMH accreditation visits.

Assist patient placement at outside facilities when admission to BIDMC is not possible or appropriate. Participate in revenue cycle improvement activities.

Required Qualifications :

  • High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years related work experience required.
  • Knowledge of third party coverage, registration and billing requirements.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  • Oral Communications : Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  • Knowledge : Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
  • Team Work : Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
  • Customer Service : Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving.

Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
