Department Summary

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office fosters a safe and secure campus in a healthy learning environment where students, faculty, staff, and guests can thrive.

The EHS Office administers multiple programs including management of Radiological and Biosafety, Hazardous Materials, and the Emergency Management Program.

We also provide services such as ergonomic assessments, indoor air quality assessments, and emergency planning assistance for events.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for the direction and oversight of the Universitys environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs.

The Director provides leadership to a number of EHS professionals with ultimate oversight of programs involving environmental regulatory compliance, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, laboratory and biosafety, radiation, fire safety, public health, and food safety.

This position serves as the primary point of contact in all safety matters. The position provides consultative assistance and technical guidance to leadership and the greater campus community.

This role participates with all levels of the campus organization to develop and implement appropriate policies and practices while continually evaluating established procedures for compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in environmental science and safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, safety, physical or life science, or related field and 5 years' of associated experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the fundamentals and principles of a wide range of EHS topics and the ability to communicate on critical technical and administrative topics with all levels of the campus organization.
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple operations; ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across diverse groups and levels of professionals.
  • Capable of working sidebyside with faculty, staff, students, compliance, legal, and other professionals to produce results that meet and / or exceed expectations.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and auditors to resolve issues and positively represent the institution.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology and equipment associated with EHS work.

Preferred Qualifications

10 years of experience.

Required License / Registration / Certifications

Current CSP and / or CHMM certification

Job Duties :

Plans and implements policies and procedures surrounding EHS to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations.

Serves as primary contact with federal, state, and local authorities regarding related matters. - (Essential)

Maintains and ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state rules, regulations, and code standards; interprets regulations on relevant issues to provide practical guidance, support, and training aimed at maintaining and developing best practices. - (Essential)

Provides strategic vision for EHS programs and provides leadership to professionals with wide ranges of experience. - (Essential)

Advises leadership on policies and practices to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local requirements and regulations. - (Essential)

Provides oversight of the environmental program that includes components such as hazardous waste management, air, pollution prevention, compliance training, and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC). - (Essential)

Provides oversight of the occupational health and safety program that includes components such as respiratory protection, indoor air quality, hearing protection, hazard communication, ergonomics, mold, general shop safety, fire safety, food safety, compliance training, and public health. - (Essential)

Provides oversight of laboratory and biosafety program. This program encompasses elements such as chemical safety, biosafety, hazardous and biological waste management, compliance training, leading the Institutional BioSafety Committee, and other general laboratory safety topics. - (Essential)

Provides oversight of the radiation safety program that includes maintenance and compliance with radioactive materials license, process and disposal of radioactive material waste, and supports the institutions’ PET imaging research projects and the clinics’ nuclear medicine component. - (Essential)

Serves as the university’s primary liaison with government agencies regarding all environmental, occupational, and life safety issues, including, but not limited to the US Environmental Protection Agency, US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Texas State agencies (SORM, TCEQ, etc.) - (Essential)

Establishes and monitors key performance metrics, measuring performance progress and evaluating EHS program effectiveness. - (Essential)

Develops and promotes educational and outreach programs aimed at informing and creating productive collaborations with faculty, staff, and student groups regarding EHS topics. - (Essential)

Ensures reports are filed timely with federal, state, and local agencies. - (Essential)
