STARTING HOURLY RATE : $16.25 - $16.99 (PLACEMENT DEPENDS ON SIMILAR EXPERIENCE HELD AND EDUCATION)

SUMMARY :

The Bus Assistant works with the Bus Driver to monitor students to ensure the students’ safety and keep the bus clean. Operates a wheelchair lift and assists students with entering and exiting the school bus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists students with getting on and off the school bus. Operates the wheelchair lift and ties down wheel chairs as needed.
  • Monitors and assists with maintain the behavior, safety, and medical needs of students on the school bus.
  • Assists Bus Driver with various tasks as needed.
  • Participates in cleaning and sterilizing buses.
  • Communicates regularly with parents, supervisors, school staff, co-workers, and students.
  • Completes all and assists with all required paperwork to include route changes, MIPS, mileage reports, and student counts.
  • Supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff;
  • maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and school information; follows Governing Board Policies;

performs all other related duties as required or assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines :

High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND six months of experience assisting adults or children with special needs preferred;

OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Possess an active Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card or obtain one within the first 90 workdays of employment.

License and Certification Requirements :

Must possess current Red Cross first aid certificate and CPR certificate at time of employment or obtain within first 10 days of employment and maintain on a current status.

  • Skill in safely operating a school bus wheelchair lift.

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to identify and address student needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer experiences, including but not limited to interacting tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Commitment to create and sustain a thriving learning and working environment for students and staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to use initiative within organizational policies, procedures and guidelines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed on a school bus along designated routes. Work requires climbing up and down bus stairs, bending, kneeling, crouching or stooping, pulling, and may require lifting up to 100 pounds.

May be exposed to hot and cold temperatures, hazardous

chemicals, and infectious diseases.
