Job Description and Duties

Are you interested in protecting the health of shellfish (i.e. oysters, abalone, crabs, sea stars etc) in the state of California?

Do you hope to gain experience in shellfish research and culture techniques? Come join us at the CDFW Shellfish Health Laboratory located at the University of California Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory.

In this position, you will master key skills used to assess shellfish health including : examinations and disease diagnosis including qPCR, microbiology, and related techniques.

Learn to conduct animal necropsies independently with appropriate sample preservation and data acquisition and analysis.

Assist with the development of diagnostic protocols for novel aquatic animal pathogens to aid management efforts. Participate in field inspections of shellfish aquaculture facilities and aquaria throughout the state.

Assist permanent staff on a broad range of duties involving health and disease management of cultured and wild shellfish populations, management of research and public exotic species holding systems, and support for federal ESA listed white abalone and black abalone recovery efforts.

Maintain animal life support systems for abalone and other shellfish including filter maintenance, siphoning tanks and collecting and feeding algae.

Conduct laboratory maintenance such as washing glassware, autoclaving trash, and ordering supplies. Collaborate on research focused on shellfish health and disease ecology.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

Wide range of working conditions including : Standing for long periods while processing samples, sitting for long periods while entering and analyzing data and conducting literature research, working in dry labs, wet labs, and field locations including rocky intertidal habitat, shellfish farms and public and research aquaria statewide.

Occasional field trips up to three nights in length, statewide.

Hours : Variable, 25-30 hours / week with the potential of 40 hours as needed. The applicant may work up to 189 days per 12-month period.
