Position Details Title Assistant Professor of Contemporary Middle Eastern and North Africa (MENA) Region Appointment Status Tenure Track Department IU Bloomington Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures Location Bloomington Position Summary The Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (MELC) in the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS) at Indiana University, Bloomington, invites applications for a tenure-track position focused on the contemporary Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region at the rank of assistant professor, to begin in August 2025.

We seek a scholar with research and teaching experience specialized in the contemporary MENA region, and with a substantive focus in one or more of the following areas :

States and societies- Religion- Immigration and displacement- Water or fossil fuel resources- Human security (civil conflict)

Responsibilities will include maintaining an active research and publication agenda and teaching four courses per academic year, including undergraduate lecture courses and graduate seminars.

The teaching load for this position is two courses per semester. The successful candidate will contribute to MELC’s long-standing tradition of offering well-subscribed courses related to the Muslim World.

The new faculty member is expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in relevant theories and methodologies, and possess the potential attract significant external funding.

Basic Qualifications Qualified candidates must possess : · Ph.D. in a relevant social science field with evidence of strong engagement with Middle East Studies.

  • Demonstrated record of research in the MENA region.· Strong record of research and teaching in one or more of the desired areas of specialization.
  • Commitment to undergraduate and graduate mentorship.· The ability to develop and teach general education survey courses as well as specialized graduate seminars.
  • Potential to attract external funding for research and fieldwork.
