As part of the Collections Value Stream within Discover, you will work on an Agile Team with our business partners to build and maintain consumer-focused systems within our Company.

This Application Engineer role is with our Tech Enablement team. With technology being a primary catalyst of change in the way we do our business, we are focused on forward-looking technology initiatives and high-value technology challenges.

Our primary goal is the introduction and solutioning of new capabilities / processes through Proof of Concepts (POC), technical adoption assistance, and piloting technology-driven best practices.

As an Application Engineer , you’ll build and release reliable software systems at scale. By partnering with enterprise-wide teams, you’ll develop and maintain full stack solutions that fit our business needs.

You’ll use your holistic view of all products (and their interactions) to design elegant solutions and strategize the future state of our larger technical ecosystem.

By independently innovating and advocating for best practices, you’ll solve complex problems and guide the team on implementing solutions from inception to production.

In this specific role, you will be part of a product team and will collaborate with a cross-functional team to design and develop technical solutions and review the work of their peers.

The position involves supporting core financial functionality of the Card Collections business, as well as working to break apart a monolithic, batch-based system into modern, cloud-based microservices.

Responsibilities :

  • Contribute to product team deliverables using Java programming technology
  • Diagnose opportunities for automation and efficiency in the end-to-end product delivery cycle
  • Solve complex technical problems and explore new ways to bring value
  • Collaborate with our business partners to understand all business requirements
  • Analyze, design, program, test, and deploy new user stories and features with high quality (security, reliability, operations) to production
  • Achieve team commitments (and influence others to do the same) by using informal leadership & highly developed communication skills
  • Have oversight on design decisions and guide the team to achieve key results for products assigned to them
  • Remediate issues using engineering principles and create proactive design solutions for potential failures
  • Contribute to and lead technology communities at Discover

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you :

  • Bachelors Computer Science or related
  • 3+ Years Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related
  • Internal applicants only : technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale

Preferred Qualifications

Bonus Points If You Have :

  • Experience with Payments and ACH
  • Experience developing and implementing API service architecture
  • Extreme automation mindset as it pertains to testing and build / deploy concepts
  • CI / CD Pipeline experience via Jenkins, Github Actions, Chef, Ansible, Nexus
  • Tech stack includes Java, Spring, Kafka, Openshift, React, and Jenkins

Compensation : The base pay for this position generally ranges between $86,500.00 to $146,100.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package.
