Albany Medical Center is a tertiary care 766-bed Level 1 trauma center housing 96 adults ICU beds, the majority of those dedicated to surgical services including trauma, advanced general surgery, complex urologic, neurosurgery, high-risk spine and complex cardiac surgery and mechanical circulatory support services (MCS).
The Department’s Division of Critical Care has clinical service lines divided between Surgical, Neurosurgical and Cardiopulmonary Surgical Intensive Care.
These units are supported by nurse practitioners, residents, trauma surgical critical care and cardiac anesthesia fellows.
Albany Medical Center is a Regional Level 1 Trauma Center recognized for the largest volume of trauma patients and best outcomes in New York State.
Albany Med’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) accepts over 1,800 admissions per year with an average daily census of 26 patients and a wide variety of cases, including patients with trauma and complex general surgical conditions.
The 15-bed Neurological Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) is the only such unit in the region designed to care for patients with severe neurological conditions or injuries.
The Cardiopulmonary Surgical ICU (CPS) is dedicated to post-operative patients undergoing procedures ranging from routine valvular surgery to complex aortic and ventricular reconstruction.
The CPS service manages all LVADs and has a robust ECMO program.
Responsibilities also include provision of patient care in our operative and procedural locations utilizing the anesthesia care team model, didactic and clinical instruction for residents, medical students, and student nurse anesthetists.
Participation in clinical and educational research is encouraged.
