JOB DESCRIPTION
Reports To : Superintendent of Schools
Supervises : Assigned Staff
Job Goal : Direct, coordinate and control the food service program in the school and
provide administrative assistance to the school system. To provide each
child with food of high nutritious quality in an atmosphere of cleanliness,
cheerfulness and personal caring.
Qualifications :
1. Bachelor's degree and six semester hours of coursework related to nutrition,
food, dietetics, home economics, business administration, educational
administration and / or food service management or WVDE approved training
as provided by the OCN. The six semester hours or approved training must
be completed within 90 days of the start date.
2. Experience in food service in a commercial or institutional setting and or
experience at the management or administrative level, or an equivalent
combination of education and experience is preferred.
3. Documentation required to satisfy the minimum requirements per West Virginia
Code, Policy 5202.
4. Experience in menu planning, food purchasing, and preparation and serving of foods
in an institutional / school food service situation.
5. Must be able to understand and implement USDA programs as outlined in state and
federal guidelines.
6. Must possess competent computer skills and be able to perform computer operations
in collecting and compiling of data in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual
reports.
7. Must be able to prepare and evaluate cost analysis on menus.
8. Must be able to prepare food and equipment bids.
9. Must provide evidence of at least eight hours of food service training obtained no more
than five years prior to or within 30 days of start date
10. Must possess the technical and instructional skills to provide in service training for food
service personnel including cafeteria managers, cooks, and secretaries in all state and
federal nutrition regulations, accounting, and all computer software programs which are used
in the operation of the school meal programs.
11. Must be able to develop budget guidelines, coordinate preparation of the budget for all
school lunch programs and the summer feeding programs.
12. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
13. Must be ethical, a self-starter, have the ability to establish and maintain positive working
relationships, and have demonstrated good attendance.
14. Other qualifications as deemed necessary, by the Superintendent, relating to the position.
Duties and Responsibilities :
1. Provide managerial and technical direction for each school by working with cafeteria
managers to improve service, equipment, and efficiency, while providing the most nutritious
meals for the best possible cost.
2. Provide the opportunity for each student to receive a nutritious lunch and breakfast.
3. Provide assistance for each school to provide adequate and reliable reports and records
for the School Food Service Program.
4. Maintain adequate and reliable reports and records for the total School Food Service Program.
5. Prepare and evaluate cost data on menus.
6. Requisition commodities and be responsible for their distribution to the schools.
7. Prepare food and equipment bids
8. Prepare a centralized county menu each month which meets the dietary guidelines.
9. Assist principals in solving School Food Service personnel problems.
10. Control inventories of equipment, supplies, commodities, and other foods.
11. Implement and upgrade computerized food service operations.
12. Improve employee skills through in-service programs and participation in state and local
food service organizations.
13. Attend state conferences to acquire knowledge on state and federal regulation changes or
implementation.
14. Maintain, interpret and implement USDA and state regulations or guidelines in all schools.
15. Monitor school lunch programs to prevent health and sanitation problems.
16. Prepare and present an annual report to the Superintendent.
17. Organize a countywide nutrition committee to assist in writing a required five-year county
comprehensive nutrition plan.
18. Provide dietetic technical assistance to cafeteria managers and nurses to assist students
with special dietary needs.
19. Other duties, as may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools, relating to the position.
Employment Term : 240 Days
Salary Schedule : Schedule #16 Salary based on experience and education level per county BOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
