To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order : 1) Los Angeles City promotional applicants who meet the minimum requirements. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to apply for this examination as a promotional candidate; 2) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles on a part-time or exempt basis who meet the minimum requirements; 3) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.

The examination will consist entirely of a weighted interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated : Attention to Detail; Responsiveness and Follow-Up; Customer Service; Teamwork; Tact; Oral Communication; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of : the methods used in presenting subjects or ideas through various graphic media; the basic principles of design; a variety of technical design aspects; the equipment used in graphics design work; printing and / or reproduction methods; typography concepts; elements of color; digital design methods and output; exhibit design principles and the process of designing a physical environment; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

As part of the interview, candidates will be required to present to the interview board a digital portfolio with samples of their graphics design work. While the interviewers will not assign a separate score to the samples, the interviewers will consider the quality of the samples in their overall evaluations of the candidate’s qualifications. Candidates should expect the interviewers to discuss the samples with them during their interview.

Specific information regarding the portfolio of graphics design samples to be presented to the interview board will be e-mailed at a later date to those candidates invited to participate in the interview. It is anticipated that candidates will be required to submit their portfolios between MONDAY, JUNE 23, 2025 and THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2025 . Candidates who do not submit a digital portfolio as instructed will not be considered further in the selection process.

Candidates who submit their portfolio as instructed will be notified by e-mail of the date, time and location of the interview, which will be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that interviews will begin during the period of MONDAY, JULY 28, 2025 to FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 2025.
