Mission or Goal of Unit : The mission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’s most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracic services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’s future cardiothoracic specialists.

Chief Purpose of this position : The Department of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health System is recruiting for an open rank, collateral, term track faculty position to serve as the Division Chair for Cardiothoracic Surgery.
This position serves in a key leadership role within the department and Pauley Heart Center for a marque program of international reputation.
In addition to leadership responsibilities, duties for this role will include clinical responsibilities in all areas of advanced cardiothoracic surgery.
Additionally, this position will support the division in teaching responsibilities at the VCU Medical Center and will further drive the growth of research within the division and department.
Position Responsibilities :
Administrative : As Chair for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, responsibilities will include and will not be limited to the management of a growing cardiothoracic multi-disciplinary practice at multiple locations and administrative management of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
This position will also be responsible for mentoring junior faculty. Philanthropy and development are an essential part of this role.
Clinical : Clinical responsibility will be in the care of the cardiothoracic patients on the MCV campus of VCU, as well as community facilities.
They will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice, with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership.
Teaching : Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities for CT surgery fellows, general surgery residents as well as medical and undergraduate students.
Will be responsible for mentoring cardiothoracic fellows with graded surgery responsibilities.
Research : Faculty member will establish clinical research projects with medical students and residents to establish evidence-based practice outcomes in the areas of cardiothoracic surgery.
Opportunities for intramural and extramural funding will be explored with a goal towards extramural funding. Collaboration with basic science faculty in Surgery, Pauley Heart Center and School of Medicine will be encouraged.
Service : Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and / or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.
g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.
Required Qualifications :
- Board certified or board eligible in thoracic surgery
- Virginia state licensure and DEA
- Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
- Ability to function in a complex matrixed environment; Must be comfortable working with multidisciplinary teams
- Effective skills in managing conflict
- Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
- Knowledge of thoracic transplantation and unwavering support for this key program at VCU
- Must be able to develop and grow the clinical programs and be active clinically including taking equitable call
- Must be comfortable with development and philanthropic activities
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
