Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering analysis support for ALDWP / NPO production activities, including detailed process modeling of metal refining, melting, casting, heat treatment, forming, machining, and welding.
  • Provide analytical support for the design and development of production tooling, fixturing, and bespoke process equipment.
  • Perform analyses ranging from simple hand calculations to complex multi-physics problems using state-of-the-art finite element methods and commercial software; document work within cost and schedule; present work for peer reviews and act as a peer reviewer for others.
  • Collaborate with team members and customers to advance LANL's capabilities and deliver results.

Position levels

  • R&D Engineer 3
  • Detailed analyses covering a wide range of difficult problems; salary range $125,200 - $211,300; responsible for completing and documenting work within budget and schedule; present work for peer reviews and provide peer review for others.

  • R&D Engineer 4
  • In addition to Engineer 3 responsibilities, provide technical leadership and oversight to an analysis team, interface with customers, engage in strategic planning, review and approve all technical work, and mentor early career staff; salary range $150,300 - $260,800.

    Minimum Job Requirements

  • Complete and thorough understanding of the finite element method, demonstrated expertise in complex modeling and simulation (structural, thermal, fluid, electromagnetic).
  • Ability to build finite element models from component geometry; knowledge of Abaqus CAE, Ansys SpaceClaim, Creo Parametric, or similar modeling software.
  • Ability to set up, run, debug, validate, and interpret results of finite element analysis.
  • Expertise with commercial applications such as Ansys, Abaqus, Comsol, and MatLab.
  • Strong documentation skills; ability to document technical results in a formal method / format.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills; strong presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in applying fundamental techniques and engineering best practices.
  • Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 4

  • Experience in aspects of project management of technical work, including defining scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones; developing cost, scope, and schedule baselines.
  • Education / Experience

    R&D Engineer 3 : Position requires a master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    R&D Engineer 4 : Position requires a master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Ph.D. may be preferred.

    Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in non-linear finite element modeling.
  • Demonstrated experience with mechanical testing (structural, thermal, fluid flow) to support model validation, including experiment design, planning, execution, data reduction, and data correlation.
  • Understanding of validation and verification methods.
  • Fundamental understanding of mechanical design engineering and the design process.
  • Experience working on Linux-based HPC.
  • Experience mentoring early career scientists and engineers.
  • Work Location

    The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment

    Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

    Q clearance; position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter.

    HRP

    This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 CFR Part 712; includes ongoing drug and alcohol testing and periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

    New-Employment Drug Test

    The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
