Research Vessel Captain
Job Summary :
The Research Vessel Captain oversees, operates and maintains the University’s research vessel in support of the institution’s educational and research activities, both at sea and in port and assists faculty and students in planning and executing safe and efficient field operations.
The Research Vessel Captain must have the ability to act calmly and methodically in emergency situations. They must also demonstrate judgment above reproach and appreciation of the significant trust and responsibility assigned to this leadership position.
Qualifications :
- USCG Near Coastal Master’s license
- Three years’ experience as Captain of a research or similar vessel
- One year experience in management and supervision of personnel
- Familiarity with coastal waters and weather patterns around the island of Oahu
- Current certification in CPR, AED and First Aid, or obtain certification within 30 calendar days of hire
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving abstract
- Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited university or college relevant to area of responsibility
- Experience with the safe deployment and retrieval of scientific equipment used aboard research vessels
- Thorough knowledge of federal and state rules, regulations and requirements pertaining to research vessel operations
- Experience maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting major research vessel systems including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, navigational, and communications systems
- 24-hour water access to the vessel in case of mechanical emergencies or impending natural disasters (i.e., hurricanes, tsunamis, etc.)
- Ability to design & fabricate equipment as necessary to achieve educational and research objectives
- SCUBA certification
- Lifeguard certification or training
- Able to work in a non-stable environment (i.e., pitching, heaving, rolling decks); in rain, hot sun, or strong winds.
- Ability to pass drug and alcohol screening tests as mandated by appropriate licensing authorities
- Must regularly walk, bike and / or travel by skiff to the worksite.
- Requires physical wherewithal and the ability to stand, navigate (use of vision), utilize hand-eye coordination, and pull, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds for extended periods.
- Able to act calmly and methodically in emergency situations.
- Demonstrate judgment above reproach and appreciation of the significant trust and responsibility assigned to this leadership position.
- Be able to work in a fast-paced environment, utilizing excellent time and stress-management skills.
- Able to work all shifts and extended hours
- Must have reliable transportation to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position
- Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Minors on Campus policy
- Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU’s winter break, if necessary
- This position may be considered an essential position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation.
Key Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions :
1. Captains the research vessel during laboratory sessions as needed. (30%)
- Operates under federal, state and university guidelines, to ensure the safety of the passengers and crew while maximizing the scientific and educational goals of the users
- Responsible for safe operation of shipboard scientific equipment, instrumentation and sampling apparatus
- Responsible for maintaining logs, records and reports of all boat activities, as required
2. Determines and oversees the schedule of maintenance and repair activities to ensure operational readiness of the vessel and auxiliary equipment. (30%)
- Sets priorities for equipment repair, replacement and routine maintenance
- Selects and secures parts, supplies and equipment for the vessel in accordance with university purchasing regulations
- Plans, manages and actively participates in the semi-annual dry dock maintenance
3. Supervises and trains full-time and part-time staff allocated to the University research vessel. (20%)
4. Designs and oversees a vessel safety program to include enforcing safety procedures and maintaining safety equipment. (10%)
- Ensures the vessel meets all federal and state requirements for passenger vessels
- In collaboration with the Director, arranges and supervise all safety inspections as required
5. Designs and implements appropriate user education / orientation programs for faculty, staff and students regarding the vessel. (5%)
- Works with vessel users in the planning of marine research and educational operations to ensure safety and maximize the goals of their work.
- Conducts seminars on seamanship and safety to faculty, students and other users of the research vessel as needed
6. Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)
- Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
- Assists with seasonal peaks.
