What is the role?
The Vice President of Business Development is a career opportunity to have a key role in company growth and expansion. The VP of BD will develop and deliver a successful sales strategy to drive revenue growth for demand-side management services.
The VP of BD will evolve from a player-coach role with personal and team revenue goals to developing and leading all business development activities.
In addition, the VP of BD will serve on the leadership team and manage the proposal team in a matrix structure. A comprehensive understanding of energy efficiency and load management opportunities, policies, legislation, and trends for targeted regions, markets, and clients is essential.

Strategy and Execution
- Collaborates with executive leadership on market expansion strategies (existing and new) and win strategies for specific large opportunities.
- Develops, drives, and optimally prioritizes activities to reach business expansion goals.
- Identifies and monitors trends, needs, and opportunities in target regions and markets to proactively and collaboratively develop solutions and superior products.
- Represents the company at industry associations, committees, and boards to engage with clients and potential clients, network, and build relationships.
- Assesses and monitors competitive needs and advantages and leverages this intelligence to help Leadership strategically position the company for success.
- Helps to align pricing, approaches, and scopes of work to optimally solve client needs and company success.
- Monitors client satisfaction and maintains client relationships at the portfolio level and above while collaborating with Michaels’ delivery to ensure client expectations are met or exceeded.
- Assists and provides input on strategic partnerships and teaming opportunities.
Business Development Leadership
- Leads, coaches, and supports the sales and proposal teams.
- Co-develops or reviews sales plans with the Business Development team.
- Supports proposal development with strategies, client solutions, win points, and differentiators through collaboration with Delivery Teams, Product Development, and Solutions.
- Facilitates contract negotiations between clients and Leadership.
- Manages, right-sizes, and optimizes sales funnel in collaboration with the Business Development team and Leadership for maximum impact.
- Reports sales funnel highlights and forecasts to Leadership on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
- Establishes performance goals for direct reports and assists them with goal setting for their direct reports.
- Manages team budget and collaborates with the marketing department for marketing expenditures (e.g., conference attendance).
- Monitors sales team needs and performance against resources and capacity to reach goals and recommends adjustments to the Leadership Team.
Company Leadership Team
- Participate in strategic discussions to establish company direction and goals
- Attend quarterly and annual planning sessions
- Works about half of the time on the business and half in the business

What are we looking for?
- Bachelor’s degree in Business or a related field
- MBA is preferred
- Ten or more years of sales experience in energy efficiency or load management industries
- Five-year track record of successful leadership and management
- Demonstrated innovation and thought leadership in the energy efficiency / load management industries
- Ability to travel up to 50% to conferences, industry events, and client meetings

Remotely in any U.S. location or any of the Michaels Energy office locations : La Crosse WI, Minneapolis, MN, Cedar Rapids, IA, Denver, CO, Chicago, IL, and Richmond, VA.
