Position Authority and Accountability :
The Nurse Consultant collaborates directly with the Administrators, Directors of Nursing, and other staff as designated by the client to provide support in regulatory compliance, education, clinical practices and other areas requested.
The Nurse Consultant, while providing services, is responsible to the client and shall only provide recommendations to facility staff when authorized by the client.

Training / Education / Licensure / Skills or Proficiency Requirements :
- Current, valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa and any other state consultation would occur.
- At least five years' experience as a Director of Nursing.
- Experience working in the assisted living space.
- Functional literacy in written and spoken English.
- Interpersonal, educational development, management, and operational skills.
- First-hand knowledge of long-term care setting and gerontological nursing.
- Knowledge of Federal and State long-term care regulations, guidelines, and laws.
- Ability to keep current with the changing issues within the profession and industry.
General Functions :
- Functions as a consultant regarding standards of practice, Federal and State regulations and laws, and professional code of ethics governing nursing services and support areas.
- Adheres to facility policies and procedures including, but not limited to, infection control, safety, resident rights, chain of command and authority.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of resident, employee, facility, and organizational information according to Privacy Rule and HIPPA standards.
- Presents a neat and professional appearance consistent with expectations of others.
- Accepts assigned duties, instructions, or correction in a cooperative manner, voicing concerns or disagreement in a professional manner through established chain of command.
- Assumes accountability for compliance with Federal, State, and other regulations within scope of control and of which informed.
- Observes safety hazards and emergency situations, and reports to appropriate person or takes corrective action according to established procedures, works safely without danger to self or others.
- Comes to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrates dependability and punctuality, complies with attendance policies.
- Will assume accountability for information contained in organizational, facility and personnel policies.
- Assume accountability for using, maintaining, and storing facility property according to established policy.
Job Functions :
- Abides by the policies and procedures necessary to the operation of the facility.
- Establishes and maintains favorable relations with local agencies, medical professional, surveyors, suppliers, consultants, media representatives, government officials, residents, families, and others with sincere relationships to the facility.
Physical, Sensory / Cognitive, Emotional Requirements :
The following not meant to be all inclusive but exemplary of the types of activities involved in the performance of the position.
Reaching, handling, fingering and or feeling - Routinely uses tactile sense and manual dexterity while performing required paperwork and documentation.
Also uses tactile sense and dexterity in assisting residents with minor tasks and for providing comfort and support to resident through touch.
Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling (strength) - Routinely engages in light to medium physical activity associated with office work, interacting with residents and family members, and monitoring the activities of staff or others throughout the facility.
Occasionally lifts to 20 lbs. and carries for short distances.
- Climbing or Balancing - Routinely maintains physical equilibrium to safely move throughout the building, conduct movement activities, transport non-ambulatory residents in wheelchairs and geri-chairs, and assist residents into and out of vehicles.
- Repetitive movements - None
- Stooping, kneeling, crouching and / or crawling - Occasionally engages in stooping / kneeling as associated with retrieving items dropped on the floor, reaching items on lower shelves or in lower drawers of filing cabinets.
- Recognition / vision and mental processing - Routinely processes and produces written information such as resident records and reports, instructional materials, regulations, and policies.
Regularly observes and evaluates resident, family, and staff actions, gestures, facial expressions, habits, and daily routines.
Observes and objectively evaluates the visual attractiveness of the environment, food, resident appearance, and other issues of quality of life and resident rights.
- Hearing - Routinely recognizes operation sounds of equipment and auditory signals or alarms, wanderer monitoring system signal, soft voices of elderly, verbal communication within the workplace.
- Smell - Routinely observes for odors relevant to maintaining a clean, pleasant environment.
- Verbal communications - Routinely interacts in an environment dependent upon audible and intelligible verbalizations.
- Emotional behavior - Routinely interacts with individuals (residents, family members, and staff) who may be discourteous, tactless, demanding, verbally and / or physically threatening or abusive, angry, or hostile, emotionally vulnerable, or mentally ill, vulgar, and mean-natured.
Routinely called upon to control own emotions and behavior to protect residents’ rights and to respond with respect and dignity.
