Job Summary
The Cardiopulmonary Director is a leadership role that oversees the delivery of respiratory, sleep center, EKG, EEG, and blood gas laboratory services.
This role combines clinical expertise with operational management, ensuring both high-quality patient care and efficient functioning of the cardiopulmonary and sleep lab departments.
Essential Functions
- Provides direct oversight of cardiopulmonary staff and department operations.
- Provides oversight of sleep center staff and department operations.
- Manages daily operations and patient flow.
- Responsible for maintaining and developing new department policies, procedures, practices, and programs.
- Coordinates personnel, resources, and equipment, including daily staffing schedules. Ensures patient care assignments are based on staffing guidelines.
- Responsible for daily operations of the blood gas lab, including equipment and supplies.
- Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of cardiopulmonary and sleep lab staff.
- Responsible for continued tracking of competency validation and education for staff members.
- Identifies educational needs and opportunities to improve processes and patient care.
- Develops, plans, and provides in-service offerings.
- Mentors and supports activities that promote professional development. Supports staff in achieving performance goals and professional development by identifying educational opportunities and planning educational support for staff.
- Develops and creates patient education materials. Reviews, tracks, or orders patient education materials.
- Tracks and follows up on incident reports.
- Oversees product evaluation and cost-effective management of supplies and equipment.
- Ensures cardiopulmonary and sleep center applies standards of care and practice as well as quality improvement in department.
- Collaborates with the Senior Director of Outpatient Services in developing and implementing the department budget.
- Maintains clinical skills required in department.
- Demonstrates the ability to support staff with problem solving and decision-making concerning patients, families, medical staff and public agencies.
- Leads and assists with staff meetings.
- Conducts research to support evidence-based practice.
- Conduct rounds for safety, infection control, and patient satisfaction.
Other Duties
- Ensures department supplies are ordered as needed.
- Participates in organizational committees as requested.
- Conducts trainings and workshops for various competencies.

Supervisory Responsibilities
- Must be proficient in the time-keeping system.
- Job includes full supervisory responsibilities such as : providing daily work direction, approval of absences or overtime, and recommends and / or approves hiring, terminations, pay change, or job change decisions.
- Decisions are made within hospital policy constraints and in collaboration with the Senior Director of Outpatient Services.
- Partially accountable for control of capital assets under the direction of the Senior Director of Outpatient Services.
- Partially accountable for long-range operational planning in collaboration with the Senior Director of Outpatient Services.
Abilities
- This job involves frequent new and varied work situations, a high level of complexity.
- The Cardiopulmonary Director is expected to perform duties independently under minimal supervision.
- Must have general respiratory care practitioner skills and knowledge of all equipment in the cardiopulmonary department including but not limited to : ventilators, blood gas analyzers, EKG and EEG machines, pulmonary function test equipment, stress lab equipment, telephone system, fax machine, and copy machine.

Involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care or other healthcare field.
- Arizona State Respiratory Care practitioner (RCP) license.
- 5 years of RCP experience.
- 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
- CPR / BLS certification (within 30 days of hire).
- ACLS certification.
- PALS certification.
- NRP certification.
